1917: The American Expeditionary Forces in France suffers their first fatalities during World War I when a German plane attacked a British-run base hospital in Camiers.

1951: President Harry S Truman addresses the nation from the Japanese peace treaty conference in San Francisco in the first live, coast-to-coast television broadcast.

1957: Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus uses Arkansas National Guardsmen to prevent nine black students from entering all-white Central High School in Little Rock.

2006: “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, 44, dies after a stingray’s barb pierced his chest.

2014: Comedian Joan Rivers dies at a New York hospital at age 81, a week after going into cardiac arrest in a doctor’s office during a routine medical procedure.

1993: Liberty Police Chief Gerald Wardrop says 104 confiscated guns that have been stored in the department’s evidence room will be destroyed. The weapons will be disabled with a torch and sold for scrap.

On opening night of the high-school football season, Austintown Fitch zaps Youngstown Chaney 21-0 in the teams’ annual West Side rivalry. In other games, Rayen blanked New Castle, 14-0, and Steubenville defeated East, 13-6.

Hundreds cheer as auto racing returns to the Canfield Fair for the first time since 1936. The cars were all open-cockpit racers, none newer than 1948.

1978: Some 63,000 public and private school students are returning to classrooms in Mahoning County, a decrease of about 3,000 from a year earlier.

On Labor Day, the immediate and long-range prospects for the Youngstown district’s 240,000-person work force looks good.

Erna Kautz, a professional costumer who moved to Youngstown in 1971, is part-owner of Masters Costumes and provides costumes for professional theaters and operas nationwide as well as for local school and community theater productions. She researched and designed 41 White House First Lady gowns for the Niles Bicentennial Commission.

1968: Thieves break into the East Side branch of the Farmers National Bank in Salem and escape with $40,000 from the vault and an unknown amount of loot from safety deposit boxes. The branch opened in February but a burglar alarm system has not yet been installed.

About 200 members of Co. A, 437th Military Police Battalion, Ohio National Guard, headquartered in Youngstown are ordered to report for duty at the Ohio Penitentiary to relieve other guardsmen who have been on duty since a revolt by prisoners in August.

Navy Hospitalman Richard Lee Powell, a Chaney High graduate, is killed in Vietnam while on patrol with a Marine unit, one week short of his 21st birthday.

1943: Attendance at the 97th annual Canfield Fair is running above the record-breaking 1942 fair, despite some rain.

Eight thousand retail salesmen will ask Mahoning County residents to buy bonds in the $16 million third War Loan campaign opening Sept. 9. The drive will be preceded by a rally in Stambaugh Auditorium.

Three regulars from last year’s Campbell Memorial High School football team – center Jim Berardi, quarterback John Babyak and fullback Joe Markovich – will form the nucleus of Coach Johnny Knapic’s 1943 team.
