YSU women golfers lead at Mill Creek

The Youngstown State women’s golf team used a record-setting performance to take the lead after round one of the fifth annual Roseann Schwartz Invitational at Mill Creek Golf Course on Monday.

The Penguins posted a team score of 286, which is the lowest 18-hole mark in school history by an impressive 10 strokes. The previous mark of 296 was set in October 2015. After one round, YSU holds an eight-stroke advantage over the defending champion, Marshall, which turned in a team score of 294.

Katlyn Shutt turned in a four-under-par 68, which earned her the lead and set a new school record for lowest single-round score in relation to par. Overall, Shutt’s round ranks as the second lowest in program history. Former Penguin Allison Mitzel shot a three-under 67 in October 2012.

Shutt sits atop the leaderboard, two strokes ahead of her teammate, Victoria Grans.

Puthita Khuanrudee is tied for fifth after posting a one-over 73 while Rattika Sittigool is tied for seventh after carding a 75. Sophomore Kara Raines is also tied for seventh with a 75 while freshman Jenna Vivo is tied for 10th after posting a 78 in her debut.

YSU golfers tie for 10th in N.Y.

The Youngstown State men’s golf team finished tied for 10th in the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate at Turning Stone Resort on Monday.

In their first event of the 2018-19 season, the Penguins were paced by senior Jason McQuown who finished in a tie for 13th.

YSU posted team scores of 298 and 304 in the first two rounds on Sunday before closing play with a 299 in the final round on Monday.

McQuown posted a three-round 219 (72-77-70) and his two-under-par 70 on Monday tied the team’s lowest mark of the tournament. It was also the second-lowest round of McQuown’s career. The senior’s final round included 14 pars and three birdies while his first-round 72 featured 12 pars and three birdies.

Sophomore Kevin Scherr tied for 27th after finishing with a 224 (79-73-72). C.J. Hughes tied for 42nd after turning in a 227 (70-75-82). Sophomore Ken Keller finished with a 236 (81-79-76) while freshman Brian Terlesky carded a 237 (77-79-81) in his first collegiate event. Playing as an individual in his collegiate debut, freshman Bryan Kordupel concluded the event with a 235 (77-81-77).

Giants sign Moss; Drummond released

Sunday, the New York Giants signed linebacker Avery Moss to the practice squad. The Former Youngstown State linebacker was cut from the Giants’ roster on Sunday.

The Houston Texans released defensive back Kurtis Drummond (Hubbard).

Salem Hall of Fame induction set

SALEM

The Salem High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct new members on Thursday.

The inductees include: Martha Willaman (Class of 1925), basketball; Tom Fisher (1970), football and basketball; Tim Cope (1976), basketball and track; Marty Hergenrother (1982), basketball; and Abigail Hill Berkman (1997), soccer.

Also being inducted will be the 1984-85 boys basketball team.

Terry Metts, a longtime Salem Junior Baseball Association coach, will receive posthumously the Joe Kelley Spirit of Salem Award.

The induction dinner and ceremony will be Thursday at Salem Community Center. The inductees will be recognized at Friday’s football game against East Liverpool.
