AUCTIONS

St. Columba Cathedral, 159 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown, will host its third annual quarter auction at 6 p.m. Saturday in the church hall. Doors open at 5:30. CLASSES

Italian Language Classes will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. each Thursday at two locations: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Youngstown, registration and first day of class is Sept. 20 and will be for beginners and intermediate; and St. Rose Church Rosetta Hall, 48 Main St., Girard, registration and first day of class is Sept. 13. Niles Friendly Squares will host “Fun Nights” from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 11 and Sept. 18 at the Niles SCOPE Center. Square dance lessons will be offered for beginners. No dance experience required. FUNDRAISERS

Austintown Alumni Association selling raffle tickets for its annual scholarship and mini-grant fundraiser through Sept. 14. A book of six raffle tickets is $5 or individual tickets are $1 each and are available from any association member or by calling Susan Justice, president of the association, at 330-792-2667. Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley Inc. will host its annual Golf for Kids’ Sake Golf Outing on Sept. 14 at Knoll Run Golf Course in Lowellville. The four-person scramble will begin at 9 a.m. Cost is $75 per golfer and includes 18 holes with cart, continental breakfast, lunch and chicken or roast beef dinner. SPECIAL EVENTS

Boardman Lions Club will host a 25-household garage sale to benefit the Boardman community from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 5226 Pinetree Lane. Parking is available in the church parking lot directly across. Boardman Lions Club will sponsor Dinner in the Dark from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 13 at Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St. Diners are blindfolded (optional) and eat without the benefit of their sight, giving perspective of challenges that face the blind in every day activities. There will be 14 booths selling everything from antiques, Avon, books, crafts, indoor and outdoor furniture, household items and more. Fish Samaritan House will host “The Mahoning Valley’s Pasta Sauce Challenge: from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at The Georgetown, 5945 South Ave., Boardman. Area restaurants will send in sauces for attendees to taste and vote for the “Best Sauce in the Valley.” The Fish Samaritan House is a nonprofit organization that serves the poor, the elderly and the children of Youngstown with food, furnishings and clothing. Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley will host its 19th annual 5K and 2-mile walk Sept. 15 at Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, Poland. The children’s race is free and will begin at 8:45 a.m., and the 5K and 2-mile walk will begin at 9. Registration fee for walkers and runners is $15 or $20 the day of the event. Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, the City of Youngstown, Youngstown City Schools, CIRV (the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence) and the Youngstown State University Department of Africana Studies are planning the Eighth Annual Nonviolence Parade and Rally at 3 p.m. Oct. 7. The parade will begin at the corner of Wick Avenue and Wood Street and proceed downtown to the Covelli Center. The rally will follow the parade. The parade is open to all nonprofit organizations such as youth and community groups, schools, athletic teams, churches, neighborhood block watches as well as businesses and government officials. There is no fee to participate in the parade. Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman Poland Road, will host a free Family Fun Carnival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event includes a bounce house, pony rides, petting zoo, rock wall, games and food.

Struthers Historical Society will host Alexander Frankfort Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Frankfort House, 50 Terrace St. There will be infantry demonstrations, American Indian displays, a rope walk and museum tours. Reenactments will be featured by the Shriver Grays, 27th VA Co. G Reeneactors; Sons of Confederate veterans; Boy Scout Troop 101; and a special appearance by Steffon Wydell Jones, a local researcher and one of the founders of the 5th United States Colored Infantry Regiment reeenactment group.

Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts, 34 N. Phelps St., Youngstown, in cooperation with the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, is sponsoring a “Donate a Hot Dog” campaign to help provide food to the area’s homeless population. Throughout the year, Suzie’s customers can donate a hot dog for the hungry and write a note of support. Donations will be matched dog-for-dog by the restaurant. On the second Wednesday of every month, employees will provide a meal and bring all the notes for the overnight residents and meal visitors at the Rescue Mission. The goal is food for the body and encouragement for the spirit. The project is inspired by the shooting death last November of Colin Brown. Brown worked in the restaurant industry, managing newly opened restaurants and helping get them off the ground. He was a volunteer with the Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator in Youngstown, was known for his pay it forward attitude and always helping those in need.

Quaker Steak & Lube Austintown, 5800 Interstate Blvd., will host Patriot Day at the Lube at 6 p.m. Thursday. Military members in uniform or with a military ID will receive 20 percent off. The event will include a skydiver landing in the parking lot.
