Scrappers fall to Black Bears

MORGANTOWN, W.VA.

The West Virginia Black Bears jumped on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for three runs in the first inning en route to Saturday’s 5-2 victory.

Daniel Amaral tripled while Brett Kinneman and Mike Gretier doubled for the Black Bears (32-42).

With two games to play against West Virginia, the Scrappers (40-33) have half-game lead over the Auburn Doubledays in the Pinckney Division. Juan Mota (4-6) suffered the loss for the Scrappers. He pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs.

Osvaldo Bido pitched six innings to earn the win for the Black Bears.

Ruben Cardenas had two of the Scrappers’ five hits. One was a double.

Cardenas and Jose Fermin scored the Scrappers’ runs. Cardenas and Connor Smith drove in the runs.

Poland football tickets available Tuesday

POLAND

The Poland High School Athletic Office will be selling general admission football tickets for Friday’s home opener against Jefferson from Tuesday through Friday from 12:30-4 p.m.

Tickets also may be purchased at Trolio’s T-Shirts from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Advance student tickets cost $4 and adult tickets cost $6. All tickets at the game cost $7.

YSU volleyball team defeats Duquesne

PITTSBURGH

The Youngstown State volleyball team won three two-point sets to sweep Duquesne 26-24, 25-23, 25-23, at the Duquesne Invitational on Saturday.

All-tournament team selection Margaux Thompson hit .282 with a match-high 15 kills while adding 16 digs, and fellow all-tournament team member Alexia Byrnes tallied 41 assists.

Four Penguins (5-2) finished with at least 10 digs with Marketa Plesingrova posting a match-high-tying 17, Aleah Hughes and Thompson registering 16 and Byrnes adding 10.

Leagues at Wedgewood in search of bowlers

The West Side Gals and Thursday Night Ladies leagues at Wedgewood Lanes begin play this week and both are seeking bowlers.

The West Side Gals open play Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. . The Thursday Night Ladies begin play Thursday at 6:15 p.m.

Mack traded to Bears; contract is extended

CHICAGO

The Chicago Bears spent the offseason loading up to end a string of losing seasons. They just made their biggest move.

The Bears acquired star pass rusher Khalil Mack from the Raiders in a massive trade on Saturday that sent two first-round draft picks to Oakland.

Mack held out for the entire offseason and preseason, seeking a new, long-term contract rather than play under the final year of his rookie deal that would have earned him $13.8 million. Raiders coach Jon Gruden, in his biggest move since returning to the sideline from the broadcast booth, accommodated the 27-year-old Mack by dealing him.

Oakland will get first-round selections in 2019 and 2020, a sixth-rounder next year and a third-rounder in 2020. Oakland also included its second-round selection in 2020 and a conditional fifth-rounder that year.

Mack and the Bears agreed to a six-year, $141 million extension that guarantees $90 million.

That makes him the highest-paid defensive player in league history one day after Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year, signed a six-year, $135 million deal, with $87 million guaranteed.

The fifth overall selection in the 2014 draft, Mack is a two-time All-Pro and the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
