North Dakota State 49, Cal Poly 3

FARGO, N.D.

Bruce Anderson ran for a career-high 185 yards on just 11 carries and scored two touchdowns as North Dakota State trounced Cal Poly. Anderson had a 10-yard touchdown run in the first half, and early in third quarter broke through the middle and ran untouched along the right sideline for a career-best 86-yard score that gave the Bison a 42-3 lead. Lance Dunn ran for three touchdowns and finished with 65 yards on six carries. NDSU quarterback Easton Stick had a nine-yard touchdown run and redshirt freshman quarterback Holden Hotchkiss added a 12-yard scoring run in his debut.

Illinois State 46, Saint Xavier 0

NORMAL, ILL.

Illinois State held Saint Xaiver to 30 yards of total offense in a victory. The Redbirds forced three interceptions and a forced fumble. St. Xavier had six players finish with negative yards rushing. Illinois State quarterback Brady Davis completed 12 of 19 passes for 123 yards. Davis found Tylor Petovich for a 15-yard pass for his only touchdown. James Robinson ran for two touchdowns for the Redbirds (1-0). Jordan Birch and Markel Smith each ran for over 50 yards and a touchdown. Birch finished with 52 yards rushing and Smith had 51.

Kansas State 27, South Dakota 24

MANHATTAN, KAN.

South Dakota led 24-12 at the start of the fourth quarter. Kansas State (1-0) cut the lead to 24-19 when Isaiah Zuber returned an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown and took the lead on Skylar Thompson’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Zuber with 7:21 left. Thompson was 8 of 14 for 61 yards passing and an interception. Zuber caught five passes for 68 yards. Austin Simmons completed 24 of 56 passes for 257 yards and a touchdowns for the Coyotes (0-1). Levi Falck caught 11 passes for 140 yards.

South Dakota States’ opener cancelled because of lightning

AMES, IOWA

Iowa State’s season opener against South Dakota State was cancelled after a 2 1/2-hour delay caused by lightning. The Cyclones announced that the game had been called off after the teams were able to get less than five minutes of play in. Iowa State said there were no immediate plans to reschedule the game. Deshaunte Jones caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Kempt to give Iowa State a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
