Tribe tops Rays, acquire Donaldson from Jays

CLEVELAND

Corey Kluber pitched seven sparkling innings, Edwin Encarnacion homered and the Cleveland Indians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Friday night.

Kluber (17-7) allowed two singles, struck out eight and walked two in Cleveland’s AL-best 14th shutout this season. Cody Allen worked a perfect eighth and Brad Hand finished the two-hitter for his 31st save.

Kluber, making a bid for a second straight AL Cy Young Award, matched Yankees ace Luis Severino for the major league lead in wins and moved into first place in the AL with 1862/3 innings.

Encarnacion snapped a scoreless tie with a solo drive to center off Tyler Glasnow (1-4) in the seventh. The Indians added two more in the ninth when Greg Allen scored on a wild pitch and Michael Brantley singled home Francisco Lindor.

Glasnow struck out six in a career-high seven innings. He was working on a no-hitter before Melky Cabrera singled with two out in the fifth.

During the game, the Indians acquired former AL MVP Josh Donaldson in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Donaldson has been limited to 36 games by injuries this season. Donaldson played his first game since May 28 this week on a rehab assignment in Florida. He batted .234 with five homers and 16 RBIs for the Blue Jays.

It’s not clear what role Donaldson will have with the Indians, who are running away with their division. Cleveland manager Terry Francona does not want to move All-Star Jose Ramirez from third to second base this late in the season.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Polanco, Pirates snap tie late to beat Braves

ATLANTA

Gregory Polanco’s eighth-inning single drove in Adam Frazier with the tiebreaking run, and the Pittsburgh Pirates recovered after blowing a two-run lead to beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Friday night.

Jameson Taillon (11-9) gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings, his 17th consecutive start allowing no more than three earned runs.

Felipe Vazquez pitched out of trouble in the ninth for his 29th save in 33 opportunities.

The Pirates led 2-0 after five innings before Taillon gave up homers in back-to-back innings.

Rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. led off the sixth with a drive into the right-field seats, his 22nd. Johan Camargo led off the seventh with another homer to right.

Frazier, pinch-hitting for Taillon, led off the eighth with a walk from Brad Brach (2-4) and moved to second when second baseman Ozzie Albies bobbled Starling Marte’s grounder for an error. Frazier scored the unearned run on Polanco’s single up the middle.

Corey Dickerson led off the second with a double down the right-field line and scored on a single up the middle by Elias Diaz. Anibal Sanchez ended the second with three straight strikeouts to begin a stretch of retiring 12 consecutive batters.

Sanchez allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in 51/3 innings.
