Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution
The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept. 17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. “Moon Over Buffalo” opens at Hopewell Theatre
Playwright Ken Ludwig’s madcap comedy tradition of “Lend Tenor” continues in “Moon Over Buffalo,” which opened at the Hopewell Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave., on Aug. 31 for a two weekend run. Directing is Regina Reynolds-Stevens assisted by stage manager Marlene Menaldi Strollo. Upcoming performance dates and times are Sept. 1, 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. Reservations can be obtained online at www.hopewllthetare.org or by calling 330-746-5455. Pre-kindergarten story time
This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten every Wednesday in September at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library.
September square dance and weekly lessons begin
The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their eighth anniversary at their monthly square dance on Sept. 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 per person donation at the door. Gene Hammond will be the caller. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each lesson builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The Tuesday evening sessions will run weekly through April 16, 2019 at the Niles SCOPE Center. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. Austintown library to close temporarily for repairs in September
The Austintown library, located at 600 S. Raccoon Road, will be temporarily closed for two weeks for repairs to and repaving of the parking lot. The closing is expected to begin on Sept. 10. The Library’s Board of Trustees approved the parking lot repairs at a special meeting on Aug. 20, in addition to the exterior painting of the Austintown and Springfield locations. Both libraries will remain open during painting. Ongoing information can be found on the library’s website, libraryvisit.org, or Facebook page, LibraryMahoningCounty. Additional work being planned for the Austintown library includes roof repairs and exterior repairs. During the two-week closure, the library’s building and grounds department will take advantage of the opportunity to do cleaning and repair work inside the building, as well. The Austintown library will have security as needed during this period and book drops will not be available. Austintown library customers can use any of the other libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) system during the closing. Nearby libraries include the Michael Kusalaba Library, located at 2815 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, and the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main St. in Canfield.
Area singers invited to annual Canfield Fair event
As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair (Sept. 2 this year), area singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. The musical selections this year include “Look at the World” and “With a Voice of Singing.” Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Sherry Goddard on piano and Josh Comport on trumpet.
Labor Day closings at the library
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day on Sept. 2 and 3.
Auditions hosted for “Twilight Zone” theatrical offering
The Hopewell Theatre and Centaur Stage Productions are collaborating to offer a very special theatrical production this Halloween season. After obtaining special permission from Rod Serling’s daughter, they will present four of Rod Serling’s classic episodes, from “The Twilight Zone” television show, in brand new original adaptations for the stage. The original Rod Serling penned episodes “Time Enough At Last,” “Changing of the Guard,” “Monsters are Due on Maple Street” and “One for the Angels” will be adapted and performed on the stage for the very first time. Auditions will take place on Sept. 4 and 5 at the Hopewell Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. both nights. The show requires actors of all ages, from age 6 through adult, of all races, genders and sizes, and everyone from neophyte to veteran is encouraged to audition. All roles are open and available. Auditioners will be asked to read from the script. This is a great opportunity for first timers, and seasoned veterans alike. Performances will be Oct. 19, 20, 26, 27 and a matinee on Oct. 28. Austintown Alumni Association hosts annual raffle
The Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini grant fund raiser. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. The first prize is $500 cash; second prize is gift certificates to local businesses worth at least $250; and the third prize is dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant and dinner for two at The Manor, valued at $50 each. Proceeds from this project support the association’s scholarship fund, which awarded six $1,000 scholarships to Fitch seniors who graduated in June, and mini grants to teachers who applied for these grants to support classroom instruction. The winners of this year’s raffle will be announced during half time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 14. Tickets can be purchased until half time or by contacting Austintown Alumni Association president Susan Justice at 330-792-2667.
DAV hosts trunk sale on Sept. 8
The DAV, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 “Junk In The Trunk Sale” will take place on Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Austintown Senior Center, located at 110 Westchester Drive in Austintown. Spaces for vendors wishing to participate in this event are available. The registration is $20 per two parking spaces, one for vehicle and one for selling,. Local skate park to be location of music festival
The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown. The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.
Rally Day Sept. 9
Redeemer Lutheran Church will host its annual Rally Day and Community Picnic on Sept. 9 at 2305 South Canfield-Niles Road. Sunday school and adult Bible class will begin at 9 a.m. The divine worship service with communion will take place at 10:30 a.m. Immediately following the worship service, there will be a free community picnic with hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage sandwiches, games and prizes for children of all ages, music and demonstrations by Austintown’s First Responders. The public is invited.
The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season
The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Aug. 31-Sept. 9 - “Moon Over Buffalo,” Oct. 19-28 - “Twilight Zone,” Dec. 7-15 - “Snoopy, the Musical,” Jan. 4-13 - “Sea Horse,” Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.
Saxon Club hosts annual flea market
The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
