Lordstown students help hurricane victims

LORDSTOWN

Students in the Lordstown Schools are collecting new clothing and school supplies to send to students in Panama City, Fla., which was hit hard by Hurricane Michael.

A Lordstown third-grader told her teacher about friends affected by the hurricane and asked if her class could write letters to the students at Springfield Elementary School there. The teacher agreed, but officials did more.

They contacted the school district in Florida and learned students needed new clothing in Pre-K through 12th grade, including underwear, socks, shirts, jeans/pants, shoes, boots and belts.

The Lordstown National Honor Society will facilitate a collection. The items will be accepted at the high school, elementary school and superintendent’s office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday.

The lecture series is funded by Dr. Ken Long, Westminster professor of chemistry emeritus, and his wife, Nancy, to invite chemists to speak with students on campus. The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact Doreen Matune at matunedm@westminster.edu or 724-946-7284.
