Bucs’ Whitehead fined for hit on Mayfield

NEW YORK

The NFL has fined Tampa Bay safety Jordan Whitehead $26,739 for unnecessary roughness against Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The league had said Friday that Whitehead should have been penalized for striking Mayfield in the side of the helmet during last Sunday’s 26-23 overtime win for Tampa Bay.

Mayfield was sliding at the end of a 35-yard scramble when he got hit by Whitehead, who was initially penalized before the officials conferred and decided to pick up the flag — and one against Mayfield for taunting.

First-year referee Shawn Hochuli made the situation worse by incorrectly announcing Mayfield “was still a runner and therefore is allowed to be hit in the head.”

Panthers safety Eric Reid was fined $10,026 for unnecessary roughness for his hit on Eagles tight end Zach Ertz in Carolina’s 21-17 win.

Also fined:

—Bengals safety Shawn Williams, $20,054 for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit against the Chiefs. Williams also fined $10,026 for a Week 1 hit on Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

—Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert, $10,026 for a chop block.

—Cowboys guard Connor Williams, $10,026 for a chop block.

AP: N.Y. Mets talking to agent for GM job

NEW YORK

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press the New York Mets and Brodie Van Wagenen are getting closer to completing a deal that would make the high-profile agent the team’s next general manager.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday night because negotiations were ongoing.

Van Wagenen appears set to switch sides after representing several Mets stars including Jacob deGrom, Yoenis Cespedes and Todd Frazier, among others.

Van Wagenen has been co-head of CAA Baseball since 2010 and emerged as the club’s top choice for GM from a list of 10-12 original candidates.

Iona forward off team for punching coach

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.

Iona senior forward Roland Griffin says he’s been kicked off the basketball team after an altercation with an assistant coach.

Griffin tells Stadium he punched assistant coach Garfield Johns multiple times in self-defense last Monday after a verbal argument in the locker room.

Stadium reports Griffin met with head coach Tim Cluess and then was told by the school he would face a disciplinary suspension that will bar him from campus activities through the end of May 2020.

The Stadium report said Johns was hospitalized briefly with a head injury and later released.

The 6-foot-7 Griffin, who is still listed on the roster on the university’s athletic website, had a career-high 29 points, four blocks, and made all 11 free throws he attempted in leading the Gaels to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title last March.
