Boardman Lions hosted their 10th annual New Coats for Kids Program at the Target in Boardman on Oct. 2.

There were 61 Boardman families who were experiencing financial difficulties and qualified to attend the night at Target to select their new coats. Ninety-six happy children shopped for new coats, and a snack was provided by Target.

Applications went home with all Boardman elementary students. Applications were evaluated by a committee and selection was based on the information provided. Coats are purchased for those families in greatest need first.

Qualified applicants were notified by mail and invited to a night at Target to select their coats. After shopping for their coats, the family was given a snack provided by Target.

Lions Members Kathy Collins, Nancy Golubic and Marcie Hughes served as personal shoppers.

The Boardman Lions are almost self-supported from donations.

This year, the club spent $4,400 on 96 coats. In the 10 year period, 455 families have received 941 coats for a total of $42,825.

The club has already started fund raising for next year. Anyone who would like to donate to the program can visit the Boardman Lion’s website, www.boardmanlions.com.
