Dinner event to benefit group’s charitable endeavors

St. Charles Knights of Columbus, located at 7345 Westview Dr, in Boardman, will host a cavatelli and meatball dinner from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 28 in Fr. Haidet Hall. The meal, including salad, cake and beverage, is $10 for adults and there are special children’s rates. Separate sale sauce and meatballs available too. Carry out is available beginning at 10:30 a.m. There will be basket and 50/50 raffles conducted. Proceeds benefit the group’s charitable endeavors.

Basket raffle to benefit local animal shelters

Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are hosting a basket raffle on Nov. 17 at The Federal, located at 110 W Federal St. in Youngstown. The event will be from 12-6 p.m. and baskets will be drawn promptly at 6 p.m. More than 100 baskets and/or gift cards will be raffled off. The winner doesn’t need to be present. Fifteen percent of all food sales will be donated back. Animal Pawtectors will have their Crystals for Critters jewelry for sale just in time for the holidays, and more. Race event to benefit local dog rescue

Join local animal shelter Legacy Dog Rescue on Nov. 10 for the sixth annual Fast & Furriest 5K Run/Walk at Waterworth Memorial Park - Pavilion 8 off Superior Ave in Salem. There will be a 500-meter dash with your dog at 9:45 a.m. followed by the 5k at 10 a.m. All proceeds from the race will benefit Legacy Dog Rescue (LDR), which is a 501c3 non- profit animal welfare organization helping dogs in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and surrounding areas. Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in November at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library on Nov. 7, 14 and 28 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Blood pressure screening

There will be a blood pressure screening on Nov. 5 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Boardman library by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Cardinal Mooney to host annual eighth-grade day

Cardinal Mooney High School will host its annual eighth-grade day on Nov. 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. Students currently in eighth grade from all area parochial, public and charter schools are invited to spend the day in classes ranging from computer science and math to art and theology. Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Mill Creek ABWA to have anniversary meeting

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Nov. 13 anniversary meeting at A la Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include roast beef, southern baked chicken, sand trap potatoes, California blend vegetables, cole slaw, tossed salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, rolls, coffee or tea and cake for dessert. The Austintown Fitch choir will be the entertainment for the evening to help the chapter celebrate their 56th anniversary. The public is welcome.

Surviving the holidays while grieving seminar offered

GriefShare: Surviving the Holidays is a seminar for people facing the holidays after a loved one’s death. The seminar will take place on Nov. 4 from 1-3 p.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church, located at 98 Homestead Dr. in Boardman. The seminar is free. The seminar features practical suggestions and reassurance through video interviews with counselors, grief experts and other people who have experienced the holidays after their loved one’s death. Topics to be discussed include dealing with hard-hitting emotions, what to do about traditions, how to survive social events and where to find comfort and strength. Those who attend will receive a survival guide filled with practical tips, encouraging words and exercises for daily help through the holiday season. Trick-or-Treat in Boardman will take place on Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Marching band to be in concert

The Boardman Spartan marching band will be in concert on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School gymnasium. This annual event is a retrospective of the 2018 marching season. The band will be seated and playing all the music from the field shows while the Spartan Sweethearts and Silks perform their visual routines on the gym floor. Immediately following the concert, audience members will be invited across the hall for a reception where they will be able to sample cupcakes baked, decorated and displayed by teams of Band students. Cupcake wars BSMB style will be based on the hit Food Network reality show “Cupcake Wars.” Participating students must create, decorate and present cupcakes that best capture the spirit of this year’s Spartan Marching Band show: “Saturday Night Live.” A panel of judges will evaluate the entries on taste while all concert-goers will be able to cast their vote on best presentation. The 173-member Spartan marching band, directed by Thomas Ruggieri, Timothy Tuite and Michael Shevock, maintains a busier performance schedule than most. The Band has played 27 events since August including a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game, three local Band Nights, and lots of school and community events. Local retired teachers association to have Nov. 14 meeting

Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Nov. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The American Legion will present colors in honor of Veteran’s Day. Scholarship chairperson Sonia Tsvetkoff will introduce and present MRTA’s scholarships to YSU School of Education students. Deana DeLuca will present a program on “Mindfulness and Meditation.” This month’s community service project will be donations to the Canfield Veterans Auxiliary. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet, which will feature roasted turkey, will be served. All area educators are invited to attend. Friendly Squares dance in November

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. The theme for the dance is Veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio.
