Saxon club hosts pork-kraut dinner event
The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner on Oct. 28 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price of $9.50 for adults and $5 for children includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.
Women’s group hosts event at church
The women’s group at Grace Lutheran Church, locared at 162 Raccoon Road in Austintown, will host their annual Trash and Treasure sale on Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be clothing, household goods, tools, decorations, books, toys and more. Baked goods will also be fore sale. Special offers will occur after 1 p.m. Proceeds from this sale will support the group’s area charities.
College Ready 101 with the Mahoning Valley College Access Program
Navigating the college-going process can be tricky for teens and their parents. This session on Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library provides general information such as application deadlines, fees and financial aid and scholarship tips. Participants will also gain an understanding of how to choose a college or career training program that is right for them. Overviews of 2-year and 4-year degrees, career and technical programs, and vocational training will be included. Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in November at 10 a.m.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library on Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 29 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Learn the basics of Microsoft Office Excel at this class at the Austintown library on Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. This is a beginner’s class, but basic computer skills are required. Space is limited. Registration is required. This event is for adults.
Cardinal Mooney to host annual eighth-grade day
Cardinal Mooney High School will host its annual eighth-grade day on Nov. 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. Students currently in eighth grade from all area parochial, public and charter schools are invited to spend the day in classes ranging from computer science and math to art and theology. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Mill Creek ABWA to have anniversary meeting
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Nov. 13 anniversary meeting at A la Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include roast beef, southern baked chicken, sand trap potatoes, California blend vegetables, cole slaw, tossed salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, rolls, coffee or tea and cake for dessert. The Austintown Fitch choir will be the entertainment for the evening to help the chapter celebrate their 56th anniversary. The public is welcome.

Neighborhood Trick-or-Treat even to take place
The second Schenley Avenue Haunt will take place on Oct. 31 from 6-10 p.m. This is a Trick-or-Treat event that is being offered again after the success of the 2017 event. This year will be bigger and better with a costume contest for the best boy and girl costumes, photo board, new animatronics, scarioke (karaoke with Halloween music) and more. Local retired teachers association to have Nov. 14 meeting
Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Nov. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The American Legion will present colors in honor of Veteran’s Day. Scholarship chairperson Sonia Tsvetkoff will introduce and present MRTA’s scholarships to YSU School of Education students. Deana DeLuca will present a program on “Mindfulness and Meditation.” This month’s community service project will be donations to the Canfield Veterans Auxiliary. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet, which will feature roasted turkey, will be served. All area educators are invited to attend. Friendly Squares dance in November
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. The theme for the dance is Veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Local DQ hosts pumpkin hunt on Oct. 27
The Austintown Dairy Queen, located at 146 N. Canfield Niles Road, will host a free pumpkin hunt on Oct. 27 at noon for children who are ages 2-9 years-old. The event will feature candy, prizes, mini pumpkins, a costume contest and more. Decorate pumpkins the DQ way. Halloween fun offered at Austintown Bounce party
Austintown Bounce, located at 4317 Kirk Road in Austintown, will host a Halloween party on Oct. 28 from 5-7 p.m. Admission is $5 and includes a hot dog, small fountain drink, treat bag (while supplies last), Halloween parade, unlimited play, games, prizes and more. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season
The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown.
