Warren Philharmonic to spotlight the greats

The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra’s fall concert, titled “Secrets and Treasures!,” will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE., and will feature works by many great composers.

The program will include Handel’s “Entrance of the Queen of Sheeba,” Haydn’s Symphony No. 2, (The Bear, Beethoven’s “Creatures of Prometheus Overture,” Rossini’s “Overture to Cinderella,” Puccini’s “Chrysanthemums,” Mozart’s “The Count’s Aria” from “The Marriage of Figaro,” and Verdi’s “Io Morro” from “Don Carlo.”

Opera singer Brian Keith Johnson, a Warren native and a favorite of WPO audiences, will join the orchestra as guest baritone soloist.

Tickets are $25 ($15 for students, free for children under age 13 with a parent or guardian), and can be purchased at the door.

Season subscriptions, which provide tickets for both 2018-19 concerts, are also available at the WPO website or by calling 330-399-3606.

The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra will continue its outreach to area third- through eighth-grade students by sponsoring an instructional concert for students at 10 a.m. Friday at Packard Music Hall.

The performance will encourage students to discover the power of classical music and the instruments, performers and composers.

Applications are now being accepted for the WPO’s Strings of Joy program, which provides free violin lessons to selected Trumbull County students in grades three through seven. The next class will begin in January.

In addition to the free weekly lessons, the WPO loans each student an age-appropriate violin and provides printed music at no cost. Instructors are qualified musicians who are paid under a separate fund consisting of grants from the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Foundation, other community organizations and individual donations.
