Girard milestone

GIRARD

Pat Pearson, Girard High School football coach, says senior quarterback Mark Waid became the 10th player in Ohio history to surpass 10,000 career passing yards in Friday’s win over LaBrae. Waid has 10,003 yards and is 10th all-time in Ohio.

STATE POLL

With the final weekend of high school football’s regular season approaching, five Mahoning Valley teams received recognition in this week’s state poll by the Associated Press. In Division III, Canfield (8-1) is the number three team with 147 points including one first-place vote. Ahead of the Cardinals are Kettering Bishop Alder (8-1) and Bellbrook (9-0). In Div. III, Hubbard (9-0) is the number three team with one first-place vote and 165 points. Ahead of the Eagles are St. Mary’s Memorial (9-0) and Cincinnati Wyoming (9-0). Girard (8-1) is 12th. In Div. V, LaBrae (8-1) dropped to ninth after last Friday’s loss to Girard. In Div. VI, McDonald (9-0) is seventh.

CANFIELD

Morgan Carey and Hannah Stein scored as the Cardinals (15-2-1) advanced to Thursday’s district final. Canfield will play Massillon Jackson at Massillon Perry High School. Ellie Accordino and Marisa Scheetz made assists and goalkeeper Lauren Slanker made three saves to record the shutout. Canfield outshot Lake 21-4. Blue Streaks goalkeeper Savannah Slide made 10 saves.

DIVISION II

Cardinal Mooney 2, Salem 1

YOUNGSTOWN

Paige Pavlok and Carolyn Kay scored for the Cardinals (12-3-4) at Youngstown State University. Anna Wollet made an assist and SKylar Huda made one save. Salem statistics were not reported. Cardinal Mooney will play West Branch on Thursday at 7 p.m. at South Range High School for the district title.

CHAMPION

Madi Haines scored on an assist from Abby White and goalkeeper Emma Gumont made 18 saves. The Golden Flashes will play Warren JFK for the district title on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Girard’s Arrowhead Stadium.
