Youngstown Phantoms fall to RoughRiders

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA

Aidan McDonough scored on a rebound of Liam Walsh’s shot with 10:24 to play to snap a 1-1 tie and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders went on to beat the Youngstown Phantoms 3-1 on Saturday night at The Stable.

Cedar Rapids added an empty-net goal by Harrison Roy with 11 seconds to play for the final margin.

Jason Polin scored the RoughRiders’ first goal 35 seconds into the second period. Just over two minutes later, the Phantoms’ Roman Kraemer tied it on a feed from Matthew DeMelis.

The Phantoms return home to Covelli Centre on Friday to host the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

Mark Porter to speak to Curbstone Coaches

Beaver Township

Scouting Ohio.Com owner and operator Mark Porter will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

YSU volleyball falls to Oakland in five sets

Youngstown

The Youngstown State volleyball team took Oakland to five sets before falling 3-2 to the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-17, 24-26, 22-25, 25-19, 15-6.

Margaux Thompson led the Penguins with 14 kills, six of which came in the third set as YSU took a 2-1 lead in the match. Thompson added 12 digs as one of five Penguins finishing with at least 11. Aleah Hughes also had a double-double with 13 kills and a team-best 14 digs and Sarah Varcolla had seven blocks. Alexia Byrnes posted 24 assists.

YSU, Simerlink family create scholarship

Youngstown State University has announced the Simerlink Family Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.

This scholarship was recently established by Robert and Patty (Halko) Simerlink, who are life-long residents of the Mahoning Valley, graduating in 1985 from Poland and Austintown Fitch, respectively, as student-athletes.

The recipient of the scholarship will alternate annually between a member of the football team and the women’s basketball team. The football player must be either a kicker, punter or long snapper. Preference for the scholarship will be given to an athlete from Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana County and a major in respiratory therapy.

Burfict fined $112,000 for hits against Steelers

NEW YORK

The NFL has been fined Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict $112,000 for multiple unnecessary roughness penalties in Cincinnati’s loss to Pittsburgh last Sunday.

The third-quarter plays involved Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back James Conner. Burfict, who has been fined 11 times for more than $315,000 during his seven-year NFL career and was suspended for four games to begin this season for violating the e league’s policy on performance enhances.

Burfict was fined for a helmet hit to Brown; he previously served a three-game suspension for a hit on Brown during the 2016 playoffs.

His other fine came for a high hit on Conner.

Jets release injured WR Terrelle Pryor

NEW YORK

The New York Jets have released wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, who is dealing with a groin injury.

The team also announced Saturday it has signed wide receiver Deontay Burnett from the practice squad to take Pryor’s spot on the active roster.

Pryor was hurt last Sunday against Indianapolis. He was signed in March as a free agent after one injury-plagued season with Washington.
