Howland’s Mauri sets school record in district meet victory

BAZETTA TOWNSHIP

Howland senior Vincent Mauri ran a sizzling 14:54.80 to win the Division I district boys cross country meet Saturday at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

Mauri’s time shattered the previous Howland record of 15:41.0. His closest competitor was Ryan Adkins of Twinsburg.

Mauri’s time would have won the Division II boys race by more than a minute and the Division III boys race by more than two minutes.

McDonald’s Connor Symbolik (17:09.84), Zack Canada (17:12.87) and Brody Rupe (17:13.63) took the top three spots in the Division III boys race. The Blue Devils won the team title and Maplewood was second. The girls teams from McDonald and Maplewood also finished 1-2 in that Division III race.

Badger’s Miranda Stanhope was the individual winner in the Division III girls race.

Next week’s regional meet will be at Boardman High School.

Poland girls finish 11th in Divisionn I state tournament

COLUMBUS

Poland’s Jenna Jacobson shot an 85 Saturday for a two-day score of 86-85—171 in the Division I girls state golf tournament at Ohio State’s Gray Course. Jacobson finished in a tie for 43rd place among individuals and the Bulldogs were 11th as a team with a two-day score of 348-365—713. They were 153-over par for the tournament. Marlie McConnell (84-90—174), Carly Ungaro (86-95—181), Elena Cammack (92-95—187) and Gianna Myers (94-96—190) also competed for Poland.

New Albany (300-292—592) won the team title. Centerville’’s Marissa Wentzler shot 2-under par (69-69—138) to win medalist honors. She was the only player in the tournament to break par.

Green’s Maxwell Moldovan shot 73-76—149 to win his second straight boys state championship. Dublin Jerome won the team title with a two-day score of 316-309—625.

Tommy Fryda tied the game at 1 for the Spartans (12-3-3) with just 15 minutes to play. With nine minutes to play in the game Trevor Boggess scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick for Boardman. The Spartans advance to a district semifinal against Massillon Jackson on Wednesday.

CANFIELD

Mitch Mangie and Tyler Cole scored goals and Cole and Daniel Feuer had assists as the Cardinals ousted the Bulldogs from tournament play. Jad Jadallah had seven saves for Canfield. The fourth-seeded Cardinals will visit top-seeded Hubbard in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Logan Baer scored the only goal of the match as the Raiders (11-4-2) defeated the Bulldogs. Canaan Johnson had the assist. Matt Lucas had seven saves for South Range, which will visit second-seeded Howland in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

HUBBARD

AJ Trobek scored three goals and Mikey VanSuch, Anthony Gagliardi and Derrick Cobbin each had one for the Eagles. Trobek and Jacob Gulu had assists for Hubbard and Dominic Colella had three saves. Brennan Kuzman and Adam Connelly scored goals for the Indians and Bailey McDermott had six saves. Hubbard will host Canfield at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a district semifinal.

BRISTOLVILLE

Champion scored two second half goals to extend a 1-0 halftime lead over Bristol. Mason McKinney, Zack Toth, and Garek Deer scored goals for the Flashes. Nolan Yartz and Aaron Ellsworth assisted on two Champion goals, and Andrew Russell made four saves. For Bristol, Damion Durst scored the lone goal and Danny Yanek had seven saves in goal. Champion will take on Crestwood Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Noah Hickman scored the only goal of the game for for Crestwood. Jack Paisley missed a penalty kick in the secodn half that would have tied the game for Lordstown. Landon Little made seven saves for Crestwood while Collin Himes made 11 for Lordstown.

MINERAL RIDGE

The top seeded Rams got three goals from TJ Gaydosh, as Mineral Ridge rolled past Rootstown. Garret Smith added two goals and Eduardo Silveira added a goal for the Rams. Mineral Ridge will hots Warren JFK on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a district semifinal.
