Akron 24, Kent State 23, OT

KENT

Kato Nelson completed a pass to Andre Williams for an 8-yard score in overtime and Akron’s defense stopped a 2-point conversion as the Zips beat Kent State to keep the wooden Wagon Wheel trophy for the fourth straight year. Kent State had the ball second in the extra session and Justin Rankin connected with Woody Barrett from 29 yards out, but a low snap was botched on the 2-point conversion attempt. Nelson threw for 219 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Akron (3-3). He also had 17 carries for 90 yards and a score. Barrett passed for 188 yards and a score and rushed for 81 yards and a TD for Kent State (1-7).

Army 31, Miami (Ohio) 30, 2OT

WEST POINT, N.Y.

Darnell Woolfolk scored on a bruising 7-yard run up the middle in the second overtime, sophomore quarterback Cam Thomas rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown in his first career start, and Army held off Miami of Ohio. The teams each kicked a field goal in the first overtime and the RedHawks scored a touchdown in the second, but coach Chuck Martin elected to go for the victory and quarterback Gus Ragland nearly stunned the Black Knights.

Buffalo 31, Toledo 17

TOLEDO

Freshman Jaret Patterson rushed for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Buffalo rallied from 10 points down to defeat Toledo and remain undefeated in the Mid-America Conference. Tyree Jackson completed 25 of 46 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns, overcoming three interceptions. Both touchdown passes went to Anthony Johnson. Bryant Koback rushed for 81 yards and a score for Toledo (3-4, 1-2), Peters hooked up with Diontae Johnson for another on the way to a 17-7 halftime lead.

Ohio 49, Bowling Green 14

ATHENS

Nathan Rourke threw for four touchdowns on eight completions and Ohio defeated Bowling Green, spoiling the debut of interim head coach and Cardinal Mooney graduate Carl Pelini. Rourke, who added 101 yards rushing, and White also had touchdown runs as did Quinton Maxwell. Maleek Irons had 116 yards on 12 carries to lead Ohio. Jarret Doege threw for 214 yards and two scores and Scott Miller had 145 yards receiving and a touchdown for Bowling Green (1-7, 0-4).

Western Michigan 35, Central Michigan 10

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH.

Jon Wassink rushed for a career-high three touchdowns — two in the final 12 minutes — and Western Michigan defeated Central Michigan, becoming bowl-eligible for a fifth season in a row. Wassink attempted only nine passes but directed a ground game that amassed 305 yards and five touchdowns for Western Michigan (6-2, 4-0). Levante Bellamy rushed 19 times for 145 yards and a score, Jamauri Bogan also had 19 carries for 96 yards and a score. Tommy Lazzaro completed 9 of 24 passes for 104 yards but was intercepted twice for Central Michigan (1-7, 0-4).

Eastern Michigan 42, Ball State 20

MUNCIE, IND.

Tyler Wiegers completed 22 of 28 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns as Eastern Michigan beat Ball State. Wiegers’ 78.6 percent completion rate is the second highest in school history. The Eagles (4-4, 2-3) led 21-6 at halftime. Line Latu and Isaac Holder each caught 41-yard touchdown passes from Wiegers. Will Jones ran for an 80-yard touchdown for the Cardinals (3-5, 2-2).
