CLUBS

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host its second meeting at A La Carte Restaurant in Canfield on Wednesday. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is at noon. Lori Brennen and Pat Marshall will be hostesses. Guest speaker will be Jan Pearson. She will discuss decluttering and organizing. Members will review various groups and their schedules, including needlework, roundtowners, book club and movie club. Steel Valley Ukers invites anyone interested in learning the ukulele to attend their meet-ups. Meetings take place once a month at the Austintown Library, usually on a Saturday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. and also at Michael Kusalaba library on the west side of Youngstown once a month on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Beginner instruction is offered during the first half of each session, followed by more complex group tunes and solos the last half. The mood is relaxed and loosely structured. Late arrivals and early departures are fine when done in a manner that does not disrupt what is going on in the room. Participants will learn chords, strum patterns and jam etiquette. The next scheduled meeting is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Michael Kusalaba Library. For information, email steelvalleyukers@yahoo.com.

Youngstown South Christian Women’s Connection will host its 80th anniversary celebration luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. The event will feature Chico’s Fashion Show, music and Bob Noble. D.A.R.E. Singles Group meets each Thursday at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road. Boardman William Homes McGuffey Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave., Liberty. State Sen. Joe Schiavoni, D-33rd, will share memories of growing up in the Mahoning Valley, his boxing career, his life in politics and his recent run for the governorship. Alzheimer Network Family Support Groups will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Easter Seals Adult Day Center, 721 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman; 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Education Building, 251 S. Grief Share Support Group, hosted by Churchill United Methodist Church, 189 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty, meets at 6 p.m. each Thursday through Dec. 13. Grief Recovery Instructional Support Groups will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home Care Center, next to the funeral home, on Main Street in Hubbard. The groups are led by Phillip Roland, grief counselor for the funeral home, and are open to anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one. NAMI Mahoning Valley offers Connections support groups for adults living with mental illness, in a discussion format, to promote self-disclosure in a safe, relaxed, supportive and confidential environment. Connections meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at Alta Care Building, 142 Javit Court, Austintown. NAMI Mahoning Valley also offers Family Support Groups that provide information and support for family members and friends of individuals with mental illness. Family groups meet the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Girard Library, 105 E. Prospect St.; and the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Alta Care, 142 Javit Court. Dual Diagnosis Group will meet the first and third Monday each month, beginning Nov. 5, and will meet at the Homes for Kids office, 165 E. Park Ave., Niles. Survivors of Suicide, Columbiana County will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Columbiana Counseling Center, 40722 state Route 154 in Lisbon.
