Local church sponsors shoe drive

Canfield Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a Soles4Souls drive to collect new and gently used shoes through Nov. 2. Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization that provides footwear to those in need in times of disaster, distributes shoes to children and adults in developing countries, and helps entrepreneurs start small businesses repairing and selling used shoes as a way to support their families. A collection bin is located in the lobby of the main entrance of the church - new or gently used shoes and boots are accepted, but no flip-flops or slippers. The church address is 140 W. Main Street in Canfield and is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. (Wednesdays until 8 p.m.) and Sundays from 9-11:30 a.m.

Local Trick-or-Treat

Trick-or-Treat in Canfield will take place on Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Newcomers group to have Oct. 24 meeting

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host their second meeting at A La Carte Restaurant in Canfield on Oct 24 with the gathering is at 11:30 a.m. and lunch at noon. Lori Brennen and Pat Marshall will be hostesses. Guest speaker Jan Pearson will speak about decluttering and organizing your homes. They will review their various groups and schedules: needlework, Roundtowners, book club and movie club. A Night at the Oasis - a 1920’s murder mystery dinner

Join in with “A Night at the Oasis,” an original script 1920’s murder mystery dinner to benefit Camp Stambaugh, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield. This event will take place on Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the dining hall at the camp. You will have your choice of one of three entrees - prime rib, chicken francese or crab-stuffed cod - along with salad, role and dessert. 1920’s dress is optional but suggested. Advanced ticket sales only and donations are $100 per couple or $60 for a single. All proceeds will benefit Camp Stambaugh, which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. Tickets can be purchased at the Camp Stambaugh Scout Shop, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and at the Great Trail Council Scout Shop, located at 1601 S. Main St. in Akron, on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., or call 234-223-6303.

Local studio hosts auditions for “The Great Russian Nutcracker”

Ruth’s Dance and Fitness Co. LLC, located at 721 Boardman-Poland Road, Suite 100A, was chosen as the host studio for “The Great Russian Nutcracker” with The Moscow Ballet, and auditions will take place on Oct. 20 at Ruth’s Dance & Fitness Co. LLC. The audition is open to ballet dancers in the community who are ages 6-18 who may be interested in performing in the ballet. Check in time and registration will start promptly at 10:30 a.m. and auditions will start at 11:30 a.m. starting with the youngest children first. Students will need to stay for a few hours because they may be double cast in two roles. If chosen, students will need to be available on Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. to rehearse with the Russian dancers. Rehearsals may go into late afternoon on Oct. 21, but students may leave when they are finished learning the choreography of the pieces they have been cast in. Also, if chosen to be in “The Great Russian Nutcracker,” students will need to pay a casting fee of $50. The final performance will take place at DeYor Performing Arts Center on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The dress rehearsal and the performance will take place on the same day.

Basic Microsoft Word class

Learn very basic computer skills involving the Microsoft Office Word program at the Canfield library on Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover cut and paste and the Word menus. Space is limited. Call 330-744-8636 to register. This event is for adults.

Join this beginner’s class on Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library where you will learn how to set up your own Libby account, download materials to your device and learn a general overview of what features Libby has to offer. Off the shelves

Welcome to the Canfield library’s monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s book club room. The next meetings will be Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. and Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. where they will discuss “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. This event is for adults. The November read is “Educated: A Memoir” by Tara Westover.

Zentangle

Have fun and create unique art at the Canfield library’s Zentangle program on Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. Learn what Zentangle is and how it benefits the mind and body. There will be a Friends of PLYMC general membership meeting on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library.

Audobon Society to have presentation on Oct. 23

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Famous People and their Fowl Obsessions” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Canfield library. From political and sports figures to actors, music composers and Nobel prize winners, this presentation looks at famous people who are also birdwatchers, with some surprising and interesting facts thrown in, and the impact that their bird watching has had on their careers, their private lives and perhaps yours as well. The speaker, Dwight Chasar, a retired Akron-area industrial research organic chemist, will also identify birds that these famous people favored in their hobby.

Local retired teachers association to have Nov. 14 meeting

Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Nov. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The American Legion will present colors in honor of Veteran’s Day. Scholarship chairperson Sonia Tsvetkoff will introduce and present MRTA’s scholarships to YSU School of Education students. Deana DeLuca will present a program on “Mindfulness and Meditation.” This month’s community service project will be donations to the Canfield Veterans Auxiliary. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet, which will feature roasted turkey, will be served. All area educators are invited to attend. Friendly Squares dance in November

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. The theme for the dance is Veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Chainsaw safety class

Chainsaws are helpful tools for landowners and foresters alike, but they are most effective when maintained correctly and operated in a safe manner. The chainsaw safety class will run from 12-2 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Mahoning County Extension Office, located at 490 S. Broad Street in Canfield. Program speaker Lee Beers, OSU Extension, will cover safe chainsaw handling and operating techniques, and will include a live demonstration of chainsaw safety checks. Registration for this event is $15, which includes program handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension. Space is limited and is filled on a first come, first serve basis, so register early. Sit ‘n stitch

Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on Oct. 23. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.

Coupon swap at the library

If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in to the Canfield library during regular hours to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion

The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, at the Canfield library every Thursday at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in October at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in October at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Wild about Harry Potter

Come dressed in your Hogwarts best, be sorted into your house and try the trivia challenge at this event at the Canfield library on Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. Make an awesome craft. Enjoy a snack and drawings. This event is for children of all ages.

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun each Monday from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend (Mah-Jongg sets not provided). This event is for adults.

Chair yoga

Pay as you attend for this chair yoga class at $10 per session. Classes will take place every Friday at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library. Dress comfortably. This event is for adults.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard.
