Penguins D Schultz out with fractured left leg

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz will miss the next four months because of a fractured left leg.

Schultz injured the leg in the first period of a shootout loss to Montreal on Saturday after getting tangled up with Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec. The team announced Monday that Schultz underwent surgery Sunday and will be out until February.

The 28-year-old Schultz has four assists in four games this season for Pittsburgh.

Ex-West Virginia RB faces child sex charge

COLUMBUS, Ga.

Police say a former West Virginia football player has been charged in Georgia with aggravated child molestation.

Authorities say Justin Crawford was arrested after a 12-year-old girl told her mother Crawford had sex with her Saturday in his Columbus home.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported that Detective Mark Scruggs testified during a preliminary hearing Crawford’s wife saw her husband standing over the girl Saturday morning, then told the girl’s mother.

Scruggs says Crawford first denied having sex, then later said it was the girl’s idea.

A lawyer for Crawford couldn’t be found.

Crawford played two seasons for West Virginia in 2016 and 2017 and signed this year as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons before being released.

The Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football says Crawford was suspended after his arrest.

Cavaliers agree with F Nance on 4-year deal

CLEVELAND

Forward Larry Nance Jr. and the Cavaliers agreed to a $44.8 million, four-year contract extension.

The sides had until Monday at 6 p.m. to work out terms for the deal or Nance would have become an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

The 25-year-old Nance joined the Cavs midway through last season after he was acquired in a trade — along with guard Jordan Clarkson — from the Los Angeles Lakers. He helped Cleveland reach its fourth straight NBA Finals and the Cavs view him as one of their core players as they rebuild without superstar LeBron James.

Nance averaged 8.9 points and 7 rebounds in 24 games last season. He’s expected to share starting duties this season with Tristan Thompson.

Braves sign Snitker to 2-year extension

ATLANTA

The Atlanta Braves agreed to a two-year contract extension with manager Brian Snitker, who guided the team to its first playoff berth since 2013.

The deal includes a club option for 2021.

Snitker was appointed interim managed in May 2016 after the firing of Freddie Gonzalez.

After a third straight 90-loss season in 2017, the Braves improved to 90-72 this year and won the NL East with some of baseball’s best young talent, including Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies and Mike Foltynewicz.
