YSU’s Calhoun to speak at Trumbull banquet
WARREN
The 16th annual Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet is slated for Sunday, Oct. 21 with 12 new members set to be enshrined during ceremonies at Warren’s DiVieste’s Banquet Center, 754 North River Rd.
Guest speaker is Youngstown State basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun.
The 2018 class includes Bill Beasom (football), Bill Burke (football), Carl Diggs (football), Bobby “Kid Alfonso” Hughes (posthumous, boxing), Jeff Hundley (baseball), Michelle Kriebel (basketball, track and field), John Krok (football), Emil “Butch” Perunko (posthumous, baseball), Andy Saxon (baseball, basketball coach), Stephen Telego Jr. (football), Bill Triplett (football) and Cheryl Weaver (coach, softball).
Tickets are $30 each with a table for eight priced at $210.

YSU’s John Barnes set as Curbstone speaker

Youngstown State University women’s basketball head coach John Barnes will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township.
The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.
Applications are being accepted for nominations for the 2019 Hall of Fame Class that will be inducted on May 5, 2019. For an application to nominate please call 330-506-6774 or 330-792-2272. The application deadline is Nov. 17.
YSU’s Sullivan sets PR; women fifth at Canisius
Youngstown State senior Ryan Sullivan posted a personal-best time of 24:34.4 and finished 41st out of 242 runners Saturday at the Pre-Nationals Meet hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Also on Saturday, The YSU women placed fifth in the Canisius Alumni Classic in Buffalo, N.Y.
Sullivan broke his previous best time by two seconds and was just two seconds shy of eclipsing Matt Folk’s 8K record of 24:32 set in 1998.
Senior Alan Burns turned in a time of 25:23..9 and Derek Basinger finished with a time of 25:45.1.
On the women’s side, Morgan Buckley led the Penguins with a 14th place finish with a time of 19:19.9 while Casey Zaitzew placed 19th in 19:38.7. Raquel Markulen came in 21st with a time of 19:41.1, Xena Maali posted a time of 20:00.4 for a 34th place finish, Emma Hunkus recorded a time of 21:21.8 and Alison Green ran a 23:10.8.
Hall of Fame fullback Jim Taylor dies ay 83
GREEN BAY, Wis.
Hall of Fame fullback Jim Taylor of the Green Bay Packers has died at 83.
The team says he died unexpectedly Saturday at a hospital in Baton Rouge, La.
Taylor played on the great Packer teams and was the league’s MVP in 1962. He won four NFL titles and scored the first rushing touchdown in Super Bowl history.
Taylor played for the Packers from 1958 to 1966 and spent 10 seasons in the NFL. He was drafted by Green Bay in the second round out of LSU in 1958. He played in a backfield that featured Paul Hornung and began to thrive when Packers coach Vince Lombardi took over in 1959.
Kurt Busch leads SHR sweep at Talladega
TALLADEGA, Ala.
Kurt Busch led a Stewart-Haas Racing sweep to put all four of the company cars up front at Talladega Superspeedway.
Busch turned a lap at 195.804 mph to qualify in the top spot for Sunday’s race. He edged teammate Clint Bowyer, who qualified second, ahead of Kevin Harvick and Aric Almirola as the Ford horsepower built by Doug Yates’ engine shop proved superior in qualifying.
Also on Saturday, Timothy Peters won the Truck Series race at Talladega after spinning leader Noah Gragson out of his way on the final lap.
