GIRLS TENNIS

Canfield, Ursuline players headed to state tournament

AKRON

Three Canfield players and two Ursuline players qualified for next week’s state tournaments at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Canfield doubles players Sydney Cianciola and Cece Economus qualified for state by finishing fifth in the Division I district tournament at Springside Racquet & Fitness Club.

Cardinals singles player Anna Kan was sixth in the district to qualify for state.

The Ursuline doubles team of Vy Hoang and Lexie Tsudis qualified for state by placing fifth in the Division II district, also at Springside.

Cianciola and Economus, both seniors, opened district play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hudson’s Susie Fan and Laura Nijhuis. They then lost to Solon’s Maggie Yang and Alexis Ratner in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9).

Cianciola and Economus then defeated Walsh Jesuit’s Lily Joyce and Emma Kealy 6-3, 6-3 and downed North Canton Hoover’s Hallie Hunt and Katie Harcourt 6-3, 6-1 for the fifth and final state qualifying spot.

Kan, a sophomore, beat Brecksville’s Mia Zivkovic 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Riverside’s Angelica Ross 6-4, 6-0. Kan then beat Strongsville’s Paige Meyers 6-3, 6-3 to clinch a state berth.

In a match for fifth place, Kan fell to North Canton Hoover’s Laurel Utterback 6-3, 6-2 to get the sixth and final singles spot at state.

Hoang and Tsudis, both seniors, beat Emma Orazen and Francie O’Neill of Chagrin Falls 6-1, 6-3, then lost to Isabella Daverio amd Rebecca Wolf of Hathaway Brown 6-0, 6-0. They won twice more to earn the fifth and final Division II state berth, taking down Wooster Triway’s Allison Kesner and Emily Allison 7-6, 6-2 and Orrville’s Sophie Flinner and Abby Adcock 6-1, 7-6.

Two area singles players lost their first-round district matches and were eliminated Boardman freshman Ava Valko fell to Westlake’s Emma Peeler 6-0, 6-1 and Canfield junior Kate Ross lost to Magnificat’s Anna Roggenburk 6-1, 6-0.

Four other area singles players competed in the Division II district. Warren JFK senior Kaytlin Marlatt beat Chagrin Falls’ Adelaide Doman 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, then fell to Rachel Buchinsky of Laurel 6-3, 6-1.

Marlatt then beat Destiny Winans of Canton South 6-1, 6-4 to reach the fifth-place match and was eliminated by Nicole Gillinov of Hathaway Brown 6-0, 6-0. Warren JFK junior Paras Kontos lost a first-round match to Winans 6-0, 6-0.

Lakeview junior Laura Garvin fell to Hawken’s Stephanie Schulman 6-0, 6-2.

Ursuline freshman Lanna Dellick lost to Claudia Adcock 6-0, 6-2. Three other doubles teams competed in the Div. II district.

Warren JFK juniors Sophia Zamarelli and Caitlyn Condoleon won their first match over Chardon NDCL’s Molly Lee and Sarah Harlan 6-3, 6-3 and then lost to Hathaway Brown’s Isabella Godsick and Megan Qiang 6-0, 6-0. Zamarelli and Condoleon were then eliminated by Flinner and Adcock 6-4, 6-4.

The Struthers duo of senior Trinity Farrar and junior Renee Leonard lost a first-round match to Flinner and Adcock.

The Ursuline duo of freshman Anna Morgione and junior Emma Thornton fell to Kesner and Allison 6-4, 6-0.

Gabriel Altawil and Dominic Malvasi scored a goal each to lead Howland (12-2-2) to the All American Conference Red Tier Championship. Altawil also had an assist for the Tigers. Goalie Lucas Brill made three saves and Donato Marsco made one save. Boardman is 10-3-3.

Cardinal Mooney 3, Lake Center Christian 2

YOUNGSTOWN

Mark Armile, Brian Philibin and Nick Jadue scored goals as the Cardinals won to improve to 4-9-3 (3-2-1 Tri-County League). Philibin added two assists and Erik Vargo made seven saves for Mooney.

Badger 9, Cornerstone Christian 1

KINSMAN

Damon Luchette scored six goals for Badger. Travis Webber, Luke Springer and Bailey Armstrong each scored once. Sam Hershey had the lone score for Cornerstone. Badger ends the regular season 14-1 and on an eight-game winning streak.

Cardinal Mooney 11, St. Thomas Aquinas 0

LOUISVILLE

Lexi Saunders scored three goals to lead Cardinal Mooney (9-3-4). Anna Wollet, Alexis Ghossain, Bre Evans, Gia Diorio, Paige Pavlok, Grace Venturella, Caitlyn Perry and MacKenzie Avery also scored for the Cardinals. Evans and Venturella and two assists each and Keelee Torma, Saunders, Annie Daprile and Perry each had one. Skylar Huda didn’t make a save. No St. Thomas Aquinas stats were provided.

Lexi Biery scored twice and Emma Eli and Gillian Koneval also scored for West Branch (14-0-2 Eastern Buckeye Conference). Koneval had two assists and Elizabeth Ostadali and Addi Biggs each had one. No other details were provided.

CANFIELD

The goal-scorer for Hickory wasn’t reported. Lauren Slanker made two saves for Canfield and her Hickory counterpart, Molly Piso, made 10.

Emily Emch made 13 kills and four blocks, and scored 12 points with three aces. Amelia Montgomery contributed 20 points, three aces and 11 digs. Sidney Rambo made eight kills and seven blocks. Haley Eskra made 22 assists and 25 digs while Nastasha Salmen made 17 digs. Anna Gorby made 15 digs and 20 assists.
