Fixer says he made gave cash N.C. State
NEW YORK
A government witness at a college basketball corruption trial claims he made a secret $40,000 payment to the inner circle of a North Carolina State recruit.
Thomas “T.J.” Gassnola told a jury on Thursday that he delivered the cash to an assistant coach at the school in 2015. He said the coach was to give it to a personal trainer for the recruit, Dennis Smith Jr.
Gassnola has pleaded guilty in an alleged scheme to pay off top prospects’ families to get them to sign with programs sponsored by Adidas.
A former Adidas executive, a former amateur league director and a business manager are on trial in a Manhattan federal court.
Smith spent one year at North Carolina State and now plays for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.
Giants coach Meulens candidate with Reds
SAN FRANCISCO
Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens interviewed with the Cincinnati Reds for their open managerial position and also is set to meet with the Minnesota Twins this week for the job that opened when Paul Molitor was fired.
Meulens was in Minneapolis on Thursday and scheduled to interview with the Twins through Friday after traveling from Cincinnati. He met with the Reds, who fired Bryan Price after a 3-15 start.
A former hitting coach with the Giants when they won World Series titles in 2010, ’12 and ’14, Meulens became bench coach this past season and Bruce Bochy’s right-hand man in his ninth season with the club.
The 51-year-old former major leaguer and native of the Dutch island of Curacao was a finalist for the Yankees managerial position last year that went to Aaron Boone.
He spent parts of seven seasons in the big leagues with the Yankees, Montreal and Arizona, retiring after the 1998 season.
Meulens was the Triple-A hitting instructor for the Indianapolis Indians in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from 2005-08.
Nebraska’s Frost calls out Oregon St., transfers
First-year Nebraska coach Scott Frost says the transfer by three of his former players to Oregon State has grabbed his attention.
Linebacker Avery Roberts, quarterback Tristan Gebbia and receiver Tyjon Lindsey all left for Oregon State. Frost earlier this month listed Oregon State as one of the schools Greg Bell couldn’t transfer to as a condition of granting the running back’s scholarship release.
It’s against NCAA rules for representatives of a school to contact a player from another school about transferring. Frost says he has “no doubt” the Husker transfers were in touch with Oregon State contacts.
Oregon State spokesman Steve Fenk says the school had no comment.
