Holy Family Seniors Group to meet

The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on Oct. 15 at Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Hostesses for this month’s meeting are Judy Fields, Barb Iberis, Mary Sass, Josephine Sylvester and Janet Will. They are planning a Halloween celebration and encourage members to wear a costume for this fun event. Lunch will be served at noon followed by Bingo and card games. Mooney alumni to host tailgate party before Ursuline game

The Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council will host a tailgate party on Oct. 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, in anticipation of the Mooney’s football game against rival Ursuline. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. All proceeds go toward supporting scholarships at Mooney. Admission includes a meal with beverage, player send off, entertainment and family-friendly games. Adult beverages will be available for purchase. Information literacy: what it means and why it matters

Did you know that 90 percent of all the information that has ever existed in the world was created between 2015 and 2017? And thanks to developments in technology, access to all of this data is likely sitting in your purse or pocket. But is access enough, or do we need new skills to determine the best and most accurate information for our purposes? Join the Poland library on Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m. as they learn those information skills through an examination of online satirical news. Scrapbook paper refrigerator magnets

Make cool and functional art on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Learn how to make your own refrigerator magnets using marble bowl fillers and scrapbook paper at this hands-on program. All materials will be provided. Registration is required and can be made by calling 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library. This event is for tweens, teens and adults.

Local historical society to meet

The Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection) in Poland Township. A program presented by Larry Baughman titled “Poland Schools Through Time,” will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Class of 1962 to have fall dinner celebration

East High School Class of 1962 will have a fall dinner to mark 56 years since graduation at Davidson’s Restaurant, located at 3636 Canfield Road in Canfield, at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 13. For more information, call Adeline DiPasqua at 330-758-4082.

Quarter auction event to take place on Oct. 13

The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its third annual quarter auction on Oct. 13 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. The event is bring your own beverage and you can bring your own food as no food or beverage will be sold. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets for a lottery wreath and 50/25/25 raffle will be available. The proceeds will benefit local charities. Bring your quarters, friends and have some fun. Halloween science

Join the Poland library on Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. for some spooky, messy Halloween fun, including an exploding pumpkin, creepy crafts and a take-home treat. This event is for children in grades 1-6 and is a holiday program.

Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion

The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Friendly Squares Halloween square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Oct. 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cueing the line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Cardinal Mooney to host parent night

Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Mushroom Guru: Walt Sturgeon

Mushroom guru and author Walt Sturgeon will present on the myriad of colors, forms and habitats of our native macro fungi at the Poland library on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. Edible and toxic species will be shown. Folklore and examples of bioluminescent species, insectivorous fungi and hallucinogenic mushrooms will also be presented. Walt is a member and trustee of the Ohio Mushroom Society which has been affiliated with the North American Mycological Association since 1982. This event is for adults.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. This is a holiday program and children may attend in costume.

Join the Poland library on Oct. 25 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This is a holiday program and children may attend in costume. This event is for children who are ages 2-3.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Poland library on Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one hour program.

Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, at the Poland library on Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.

Join the Poland library every Thursday in October at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join the Poland library on Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Trim a tree for October

Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree throughout regular hours in October. This event is for children of all ages.

Beginning conversational French

Join Ron Saffell for this series of six programs every Wednesday starting on Sept. 19 and ending on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. and learn French using games and fun activities. This event is for adults only. Reservations are needed for each date you will attend.

Yoga class

The Poland library will offer a yoga class every Wednesday in October at 5 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session. This event is for adults.

Gilchrist to be honored

Stephanie Gilchrist, Executive Director of Inspiring Minds Youngstown, will be honored as “Woman of the Year” at a special event during National Business Women’s Week Æ, sponsored by the Youngstown Business and Professional Women. The event will take place on Oct. 16 at The Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Dr. Anne McMahon Scholarship Award, which is awarded annually to a deserving female student furthering her education at Youngstown State University. The cost for event tickets is $55 each. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa.
