ASSOCIATIONS

Mahoning Valley Railroad Heritage Association will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at Eat ‘n Park, 5451 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, in the meeting room. CLUBS

Altrusa Club of Youngstown will host its annual Shoppopalooza Lunch & Shopfest at Michael Alberini’s Restaurant, 1140 Boardman-Poland Road, Poland, on Thursday at 11 a.m. Cost will be $25. The proceeds will support the club’s annual Plant the Seed to Read Book Festival. The club’s mission is to promote children’s literacy in the valley. Monday Night Writers Club will meet Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield Library, 43 W Main St. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. COUNCILS

Youngstown Council of Catholic Nurses will meet at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday at St. Columba Cathedral, 159 W. Rayen Ave., for a memorial Mass. Lunch will take place after the service in the church hall.

Youngstown Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. will host its monthly meeting Saturday at the McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road, Youngstown. The executive board will meet at noon, and the general meeting will follow at 1 p.m. Members are asked to take their gift baskets and ticket money for the annual membership luncheon planned for Oct. 20.

Boardman William Homes McGuffey Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 20 at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave., Liberty. State Sen. Joe Schiavoni, D-33rd, will share memories of growing up in the Mahoning Valley, his boxing career, his life in politics and his recent run for the governorship. Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society will host its next meeting Sunday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 1463 Shields Road, Boardman. October’s program will include how to harvest dahlia tubers by digging, dividing and storing them for winter. There also will be a question-and-answer period followed by a discussion of the 2018 growing season.

Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. A program presented by Larry Baughman titled, “Poland Schools Through Time,” will begin at 7:30.

Alzheimer Network Family Support Groups will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Girard Free Library, 105 E. Grief Recovery Instructional Support Groups will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home Care Center, next to the funeral home, on Main Street in Hubbard. NAMI Mahoning Valley offers Connections support groups for adults living with mental illness, in a discussion format, to promote self-disclosure in a safe, relaxed, supportive and confidential environment. Connections meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at Alta Care Building, 142 Javit Court, Austintown. NAMI Mahoning Valley also offers Family Support Groups that provide information and support for family members and friends of individuals with mental illness. Family groups meet the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Girard Library, 105 E. Prospect St.; and the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Alta Care, 142 Javit Court. Dual Diagnosis Group will meet the first and third Monday of each month, beginning Nov. 5, and will meet at the Homes for Kids office, 165 E. Park Ave., Niles. Survivors of Suicide, Columbiana County will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Columbiana Counseling Center, 40722 state Route 154 in Lisbon.
