Prezi class offered
Learn how to create a Prezi, presentation software that is an alternative to PowerPoint, on Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Stephen King Constant Readers club
Join the Canfield library on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Stephen King’s riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Oct. 15
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Oct. 15 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main Street in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Allen to speak to heritage group
Dr. Donald Allen will speak on his findings about the Battle of Tarawa to members of the World War II Heritage Group when it meets on Oct. 15 at Ala Carte Catering in Canfield. A buffet dinner will precede the presentation at 6:15 p.m. costing $14 per person. Reservations can be made by contacting David Frank at 757-0515 by Oct. 12. Born and raised in Illinois, Allen enlisted in the Air Force on May 12, 1967 for a four-year stint. He served as military journalist in the Philippines as a photographer, reporter and editor of an award winning base newspaper. He was discharged as a staff Sgt (E-5) on March 23, 1971. Moving to Youngstown in 1984, he worked at a local veterinary practice prior to opening his own practice in 1992. An amateur World War II historian, he wrote and published “Tarawa-the Aftermath” in 2001. It tells the story of Tarawa Atoll before and after the Nov. 20-23 assault by the Marine Corp.
Chainsaw safety class
Chainsaws are helpful tools for landowners and foresters alike, but they are most effective when maintained correctly and operated in a safe manner. The chainsaw safety class will run from 12-2 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Mahoning County Extension Office, located at 490 S. Broad Street in Canfield. Program speaker Lee Beers, OSU Extension, will cover safe chainsaw handling and operating techniques, and will include a live demonstration of chainsaw safety checks. Registration for this event is $15, which includes program handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension. Space is limited and is filled on a first come, first serve basis, so register early. MCCTC culinary program to host annual clambake
The Culinary Arts annual clambake is taking place on Oct. 19 in the Bistro at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. There will be three seatings for the event: 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. The cost of the tickets are $40 per person. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, call 330-729-4106. Mooney alumni to host tailgate party before Ursuline game
The Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council will host a tailgate party on Oct. 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, in anticipation of the Mooney’s football game against rival Ursuline. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. All proceeds go toward supporting scholarships at Mooney. Admission includes a meal with beverage, player send off, entertainment and family-friendly games. Adult beverages will be available for purchase. Book sale and craft show to take place on Oct. 13
The Friends of the Library - Canfield Committee will host its annual book sale on Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Canfield library. Proceeds of the book sale are used to benefit the library. New this year will be the addition of a craft show. Craft vendors will have their wares on display for purchase during the book sale. The public is invited to donate books for the sale and to bring them on Oct. 13 from 8-9 a.m. during the set-up time for the sale. Gently used, clean, quality books are appreciated; no encyclopedias, textbooks or outdated technical or medical books can be accepted. Donated books may only be dropped off early the day of the sale, as the library cannot accept or store donations. The Canfield Committee will also host the Friends’ second annual Mah Jongg Tournament on March 19, as well as a Spring Tea, which will take place on May 19. The Committee will meet on Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m. in the Canfield library for event planning. New members are welcome. Magnetic Magic
Join the Canfield library on Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m. as they explore the use of magnets in a creative way. They will make their own magnetic slime, save their places with an “attractive” bookmark and make a unique piece of art that has real magnetic pull. Snacks will be provided. This event is for tweens ages 9-12.
Coloring for grown-ups
Join the Canfield library on Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This event is for adults and teens.
Sit ‘n stitch
Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on Oct. 23. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.

Quarter auction event to take place on Oct. 13
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its third annual quarter auction on Oct. 13 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. The event is bring your own beverage and you can bring your own food as no food or beverage will be sold. Tickets are $10 each. Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion
The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Friendly Squares Halloween square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Oct. 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cueing the line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night
Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Gamblers Anonymous meetings
A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
CUMC hosts event on Oct. 13

Celebrate teen read week with Mindy McGinnis
Help the Canfield library celebrate Teen Read Week, which is a national event from Oct. 7-13, with award-winning, Ohio author and blogger, Mindy McGinnis on Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. McGinnis writes across multiple genres including post-apocalyptic, historical, thriller, contemporary, mystery and fantasy. “A Madness so Discreet,” McGinnis’s gothic historical set in an insane asylum, won the Edgar award for Best Teen Mystery in 2015. She also manages a blog titled, “Writer, Writer, Pants on Fire,” which features author interviews, writing advice, query critiques and help in navigating the seas of the publishing world. You can also listen to her weekly podcast that features interviews with published authors.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, at the Canfield library every Thursday at 10 a.m.

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in October at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in October at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Wild about Harry Potter
Come dressed in your Hogwarts best, be sorted into your house and try the trivia challenge at this event at the Canfield library on Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. Make an awesome craft. Enjoy a snack and drawings. This event is for children of all ages.
Lego my library
Meet at the Canfield library on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. and Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Mah-Jongg Mondays
Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun each Monday from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend (Mah-Jongg sets not provided). This event is for adults.

Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.
