Boardman High School orchestra to present fall pops concert

The Boardman High School classical, symphony, chamber and Project Mayhem orchestras will present a concert at the Boardman Performing Arts Center on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. Admission donation for the concert will be $3 per adult and $1 per student with senior citizens, infants and pre-school students admitted free. Music with a popular classical and rock flair will be featured on this concert. Works from classical era composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to modern day composer John Williams will be performed. The Boardman orchestras are the only school-sponsored ensembles in this area of their kind. The high school orchestra department instructs more than 130 students and is under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Joel Monaco. Upcoming concerts for the orchestras are Dec. 12, March 22 (Project Mayhem) and May 22. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and are in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

Apprentice’s Inn

Join the Boardman library’s beginners Dungeons and Dragons club and join the adventure on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Go on dangerous quests with daring fights and hopefully you roll a D20 to save the day. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Manning to give presentation on “David Tod and the Civil War”

Traci Manning, local historian and Curator of Education with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, will give a presentation on “David Tod and the Civil War” at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. Her lecture is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling Dona Hammond at 330-726-0651. Manning has a B.A. in Religion and Civil War Era Studies from Gettysburg College, a M.A. in Applied History from Shippensburg University and Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary Social Studies Education from Wilson College. She spent six years working for the National Park Service as a park ranger in various Civil War parks, including Gettysburg National Military Park, Vicksburg National Military Park and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park before coming to the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. Her fields of study include the early Civil Rights Moment, the American Civil War and women’s history. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 am at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. Visitors, new members and guests are always welcome.

I Read YA book club

This book club, which will take place on Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature from ages 18 and up. Talk about why you like YA. Let’s read and discuss. This month they will be discussing “Grit” by Gillian French. This event is for adults.

Sherman Creative Promotions recently announced that Stephanie Shapiro has partnered with owners Bruce and Carol Sherman to help with strategic planning and business operations.

Senator Schiavoni to share memories

Ohio State Senator Joe Schiavoni, will share memories of his lifetime in Mahoning Valley and career in the Ohio Statehouse on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, located at 3135 Belmont Avenue in Liberty, for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. The program is open to the public. Admission is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will take place, to benefit the society’s education mission. Mooney alumni to host tailgate party before Ursuline game

The Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council will host a tailgate party on Oct. 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, in anticipation of the Mooney’s football game against rival Ursuline. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. All proceeds go toward supporting scholarships at Mooney. Admission includes a meal with beverage, player send off, entertainment and family-friendly games. Adult beverages will be available for purchase. Class of 1962 to have fall dinner celebration

East High School Class of 1962 will have a fall dinner to mark 56 years since graduation at Davidson’s Restaurant, located at 3636 Canfield Road in Canfield, at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 13. For more information, call Adeline DiPasqua at 330-758-4082.

Quarter auction event to take place on Oct. 13

The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its third annual quarter auction on Oct. 13 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. The event is bring your own beverage and you can bring your own food as no food or beverage will be sold. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets for a lottery wreath and 50/25/25 raffle will be available. The proceeds will benefit local charities. Bring your quarters, friends and have some fun. Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion

The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Friendly Squares Halloween square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Oct. 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cueing the line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library on Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This is a holiday program and children may attend in costume. This event is for children who are ages 2-3.

Cardinal Mooney to host parent night

Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. This program on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library will cover important options current Medicare beneficiaries will need to know before changing Medicare plans during open enrollment. Lego my library

Meet at the Boardman library on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Gamblers Anonymous

A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize, at the Boardman library every Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library on Oct. 30 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). This event is for adults.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at 1451 Churchill Hubbard Road in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible.
