The influenza epidemic in the Mahoning Valley

Auditions to take place for “The Sea Horse”
Auditions for “The Sea Horse” by Edward J. Moore and directed by Rosalyn Blystone will take place on Oct. 13 and 14 at 6 p.m. at the Hopewell Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Performances dates are Jan. 4, 5, 11, 12 and 13. Rehearsals start on Oct. 22. Casting needs are Gertrude Bloom - 25-40 year-old female, fuller figured body type and Harry Bales - 25-40 year-old male, fit and athletic body type. No parts have been pre-cast. Local DQ hosts pumpkin hunt
The Austintown Dairy Queen, located at 146 N. Canfield Niles Road, will host a free pumpkin hunt on Oct. 27 at noon for children who are ages 2-9 years-old. The event will feature candy, prizes, mini pumpkins, a costume contest and more. Decorate pumpkins the DQ way. Fall Senior Citizens Dinner to be Oct. 24
Food, entertainment and more are in store for Austintown seniors, 65 and older, on Oct. 24 for the Fall Senior Citizens Dinner. Board members, student groups and school staff will serve dinner during this bi-annual event at 4 p.m. in the Fitch High School cafeteria. Students from the high school choir, band and orchestra will entertain guests throughout the dinner. Tickets for the senior dinner are $2 and advance reservations are required. Mooney alumni to host tailgate party
The Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council will host a tailgate party on Oct. 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, in anticipation of the Mooney’s football game against rival Ursuline. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. All proceeds go toward supporting scholarships at Mooney. Admission includes a meal with beverage, player send off, entertainment and family-friendly games. Adult beverages will be available for purchase. Read to Reese
On Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Austintown library, you can read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Swiss steak dinner fundraiser to be Oct. 14
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus # 3930 will be sponsoring a Swiss steak dinner on Oct. 14. The dinner will take place at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown from 12-5 p.m. The cost will be $10 per dinner. Dinners include Swiss steak, real mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, salad, bread and butter, desserts and beverages. Carry-out and curbside service will also be available. Included will be a Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit the men’s renewal program.
Supper at the Corner on Oct. 18
There will be a Supper at the Corner event at Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road in Austintown, on Oct. 18 from 4:30-6 p.m. This supper is a free community outreach event of the church that is open to all each month. Donations will be accepted to continue this program.
Quarter auction event to take place on Oct. 13
The GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is hosting its third annual quarter auction on Oct. 13 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers. The doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. The event is bring your own beverage and you can bring your own food as no food or beverage will be sold. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets for a lottery wreath and 50/25/25 raffle will be available. The proceeds will benefit local charities. Bring your quarters, friends and have some fun. Mooney Class of 1963 to have 55th reunion
The Cardinal Mooney Class of 1963 55th reunion will take place on Oct. 20. The event was planned by the reunion committee based on feedback from the 70th birthday party in 2015. Events include a meeting in the Radius Room of Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park from 1-4 p.m., a Mass at St. Dominic at 5 p.m., a presentation by Mark Oles, President of Cardinal Mooney, and tour at 6:15 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney High School and an evening mixer at 7 p.m. at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern, located at 1497 Boardman Canfield Road. Refreshments will be provided, and a cash bar and dinner is available to purchase from a limited menu. The fest of the activities are included at a cost of $30 per person. Friendly Squares Halloween square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Oct. 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cueing the line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night
Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixth-grade. Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Gamblers Anonymous
A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Celebrate National Italian-American Heritage Month by searching the library for pictures of the United States’ most famous, notorious and beloved Italian-Americans and their traditions throughout regular library hours in October. One selected winner will receive a gift card to a local pizza shop. This event is for children of all ages.
Immaculate Heart of Mary hosts BINGO event
Every second Wednesday of the month, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will host a special BINGO event. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and games will begin at 10:05 a.m. A master set costs $10 and no sales will be available after 10 a.m. Eight games will be played with a 60/40 split with the last game being a winner take all coverall. Autism interaction workshop to take place on Oct. 16
In conjunction with the state affiliates of the Autism Society of America, the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley is partnering with the Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning County Mental Health Boards, Potential Development Program and the Rich Center for Autism to host an Autism interaction training workshop on Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Four Mile Run Christian Church, located at 701 North Four Mile Run Road in Youngstown. Continental breakfast and lunch is provided. Scholarships are available via the county Mental Health and Recovery Boards. Workshops have been approved for Advanced CIT Training. The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season
The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Oct. 19-28 - “Twilight Zone,” Dec. 7-15 - “Snoopy, the Musical,” Jan. 4-13 - “Sea Horse,” Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.
