Rachel Bloom, star of The CW’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” discussed the upcoming season and beyond in this exchange:
Q. What is the theme of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” in its fourth and final season?
A. The fourth phase is kind of recovery and starting from scratch, and in a really fun way. Every season of our show kind of feels like a mini-new-show, so it always feels fresh and it always feels new.
The first season was very much about her creating this romantic comedy because of her inner chaos, and we’re very excited for the second part of the (last) season. (Rebecca) settled, and then the chaos starts happening around her, and she finds herself in the middle of a bunch of romantic comedies.
Q. As the last round of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” begins, the character Greg is returning ... but he’s played by a different actor, Skylar Astin. What can you say about that?
A. We don’t want to spoil it too much, but we’re so excited. It is not only like a big leap and feels experimental and playful – like our show – but as you will see when the show airs, it will be kind of a great statement on how our perception of people changes.
Greg is sort of a barometer of how many Rebecca has changed, because she will not have seen him for two years. And Skylar’s lovely.
Q. A “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” stage musical has been mentioned on Instagram. Is that actually happening?
A. It was a bit premature on my part. I was very excited. It’s not a thing. It’s just... you know, Broadway is hard. Every time you get a “like” on Instagram, it’s a surge of dopamine in your brain. And I was really tired that day, and I needed some caffeine. And I was like, “I know what I need. Some good old-fashioned dopamine. I’m going to pose in a bathroom selfie.” And it worked.
