16 Valley football teams faring well in computer ratings

MASSILLON

The Poland High School girls golf team shot a 340 on Tuesday to qualify for next week’s state tournament in Columbus.

Poland, led by senior Jenna Jacobson’s 81, finished fourth at the District Tournament at the Legends of Massillon course.

Senior Marlie McConnell shot 83, junior Carly Ungaro had 86 and senior Elena Cammack shot 90,

The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team earn state trips. Massillon Jackson won the tournament with a 317. Canton GlenOak was second with 328 and North Canton Hoover was third with 338.

Poland tied Solon with 340. Poland won the tiebreaker with fifth golfer Gianna Myers shooting a 93 compared to Solon’s Catherine Shong’s 98.

Canfield shot 376 to finish 13th. Hannah Keffler led the Cardinals with 82, six strokes behind the number needed to qualify for state.

Also for the Cardinals, Victoria Messuri shot 95, Kristin Shelley 98 and Ava Staebler 101.

For Howland, Madison Schaefer shot 98 and Emily Darlington shot 102.

FOOTBALL RATINGS

This week’s football computer playoff ratings have 16 Mahoning Valley teams in position to play in Week 11 and six more on the outside looking in.

LaBrae (7-0) is the only team holding down the top spot in its region. The Vikings are first in Division V, Region 17. Crestview (4-2) is sixth. South Range (4-3) dropped to 10th. The top eight teams in each region move on to the playoffs.

Canfield (7-0) is the number-two team in Div. III, Region 9. Kenston (7-0) took over the top spot. West Branch (6-1) is 11th.

The Valley is strongly represented in Div. IV, Region 13. Hubbard (7-0) is third, while Poland (5-2) is fourth. East Liverpool is fifth.

The two teams that defeated Poland come next. Struthers (5-2) is sixth and East (5-2), which was moved down from Div. II to Div. IV two weeks ago, jumped up to seventh after Friday’s 10-0 win over Poland. Salem (3-4) is ranked 10th.

Austintown Fitch (5-2), the Valley’s only Div. I team, is sixth in Region 1.

In Div. II, Warren Harding (5-2) moved ahead of Boardman (4-3) after Friday’s 17-14 victory over the Spartans. The Raiders are fifth and the Spartans are sixth.

Three area teams are in this week’s Div. VI, Region 21 list. Southern (6-1) is sixth, Springfield (6-1) is seventh and McDonald (7-0) is eighth.

Western Reserve (6-1) and United (5-2) are 11th and 12th.

In Div. VII, Region 25, Valley Christian (5-2) is fifth and Leetonia (3-4) is seventh. Lisbon (3-4) is 12th.
