Miami (Ohio) 41, Akron 17
AKRON
Kenny Young had two rushing touchdowns and one receiving, Brad Koenig intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble, and Miami (Ohio) beat Akron. The RedHawks forced three straight turnovers in the fourth quarter to secure it. Bart Baratti made an interception, leading to a field goal and after Koenig’s fumble recovery, offensive lineman Jordan Rigg scored when he recovered a teammate’s fumble in the end zone. Gus Ragland was 24 of 33 for 214 yards passing, including a 7-yard TD pass to Young that gave Miami (2-4, 2-1 Mid-American) a 14-0 lead. Akron took a 17-14 third-quarter lead after Ulysees Gilbert III recovered a fumbled punt and ran 46 yards for a score. Young scored the go-ahead TD on a 3-yard run and added a 74-yard scoring run as the RedHawks pulled away. Kato Nelson was 19 of 35 for 203 yards and three interceptions for Akron (2-2, 0-1), with a 17-yard TD pass to Nate Stewart.
Ohio 27, Kent State 26
KENT
Nathan Rourke passed for 284 yards and a touchdown and scored on an 8-yard run with 1:28 remaining to rally Ohio to a victory over Kent State in its Mid-American Conference opener. Kent State used two first-quarter TD passes from Woody Barrett — including a 75-yarder to Isaiah McKoy — and three field goals by Matthew Trickett to take a 23-14 lead into the final quarter. The Bobcats (3-2) used a 5-yard TD run by A.J. Ouellette to pull within 23-21 with 12:45 left. Trickett added his fourth field goal to push the Golden Flashes lead to 26-21 with 5:12 remaining. But Rourke directed a nine-play, 81-yard drive, ending with his TD run to give Ohio a 27-26 lead. After Kent State (1-5, 0-2) stopped Ohio on a two-point conversion run, the Golden Flashes saw their bid for a comeback fall short when Javon Hagan picked off Barrett with 1:15 to go. Justin Rankin carried 16 times for 123 yards for the Golden Flashes. Barrett passed for 271 yards and McKoy had eight catches for 118 yards.
Toledo 52, Bowling Green 36
TOLEDO
Eli Peters threw for three touchdowns, Bryant Koback ran for three scores and Toledo used the fourth quarter to distance itself from Bowling Green. It was the Rockets’ ninth-straight win in their series against Bowling Green. Leading 31-28 entering the fourth, Koback had touchdown runs of 7, 5 and 21 yards in a 61/2-minute span for a 52-28 lead with 3:10 left to play. Toledo (3-2, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) built a 17-0 lead after a quarter before the Falcons got two scores from Andrew Clair, one on a 60-yard run, and another on a 61-yard pass from Jarret Doege, to reduce the deficit to 24-21 at halftime. The teams traded touchdowns in the third before Toledo’s decisive fourth quarter. Koback finished with 90 yards rushing on 11 carries and Shakif Seymour ran 18 times for 101 yards. Doege led Bowling Green (1-5, 0-2) with 289 yards passing and three touchdowns, and Clair had 12 carries for 118 yards.
