Nonviolence Parade planned for Sunday

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, the City of Youngstown, Youngstown City Schools, CIRV, and the YSU Department of Africana Studies will host the 8th annual Nonviolence Parade and Rally at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The parade, which kicks off Ohio Nonviolence Week, which is Sunday through Oct. 13, will begin at the corner of Wick Avenue and Wood Street and proceed downtown to the Covelli Center. The rally will follow immediately after the parade.

The purpose of the parade and rally is to encourage members of the community pause and think about the need to work for nonviolence. Awards will be given for the organization with the best banner and the best float that carries out the theme of Nonviolence and Peace.

There also will be a trophy given to the group with the best overall presentation for peace and nonviolence. There is no fee to participate in the parade.

Park to host special teen driving program

Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School, hosted by Mahoning Valley Region SCCA, will take place at Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Tire Rack Street Survival is the largest active nonprofit national driver education program that teaches teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel.

Tire Rack Street Survival is open to licensed and permitted drivers age 15 to 21. Forms, schedules and more information can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org.

The cost is $95 per student, and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates.

Shelter offers calendars

The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County is selling Lottery Calendars for 2019. Calendar sales benefits victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and victims of other violent crimes. For 2019, there is a new format for the calendars.

They will temporarily be sold for January only for a donation of $10. Purchase a ticket from the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County this year, and participants will have a chance to win every day for the month of January.

The winner is based on the first evening three-digit drawing of the Pennsylvania State Lottery. If the winning ticket is not sold, the winnings will roll to the next day. Call 724-652-9206, ext. 100, to purchase tickets or for information.
