The Youngstown Blue Coats will host an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 6169 Youngstown-Hubbard Road, to begin the 2018 collections season. Items collected will be distributed for free to the homeless and needy in the area with emphasis on veterans. Tours of the facility are available and light refreshments will be provided.
Items needed are sleeping bags, coats, hoodies, hats, winter gloves, hand/foot warmers, extra-large gym and duffel bags, scarves, boots, blankets and socks, which must be new.
The Youngstown Blue Coats motto is “In America, Nobody Should Freeze to Death.”
Library to host ‘Go Wild in the Park’

Salem Parks and Recreation and Salem Public Library will host “Go Wild in the Park” from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 on the north side of Waterworth Memorial Park for a “Story Trail.” The story, “Count the Monkeys,” by Mac Barnett, will be posted along the trail for children to read and activities to complete. Children who have their trail card stamped as they read and walk the trail will have the opportunity to meet Curious George and have a snack at the end of the trail.
The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Parking will be available on Sunset Boulevard near the dog park and trail entrance. For information, call the library at 330-332-0042 or Shane Franks at 330-332-5512.
Training workshop to take place Oct. 16

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley is partnering with the Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning County Mental Health Boards, Potential Development with and the Rich Center for Austism to host an Autism Interaction Training workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at Four Mile Run Christian Church, 701 N. Cost for the workshop is $20 per person and the workshop has been approved for advanced CIT Training.
Church to host food festival

St. Maron Church, 1555 Meridian Road, will host its Lebanese Food Festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Menu to include chicken and lamb kabobs, kibbe, grape leaves, tabbouli and more. There also will be gluten-free and vegetarian items available.
Shelter to host candlelight vigil

Sojourner House Domestic Violence Program will host its annual candlelight vigil against domestic violence at noon Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.
This year’s theme “Together We Can” will feature statements by a survivor of domestic violence, as well as guest speakers from the City of Youngstown’s Mayor’s Office, Dave Lomax, Sister Patricia McNicholas of Beatitude House, and Boardman Township Police Sgt. Glen Riddle.
Soloist Katie Rein from Austintown Fitch High School will provide song during the candlelight ceremony and will be accompanied by Zach Potkanowicz. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in taking the No More Pledge that will help spread awareness and information throughout the community.
MCCTC clambake
CANFIELD
The Culinary Arts Annual Clambake will take place Oct. 19 in the Bistro at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road. There will be three seatings for the event; 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 each. To purchase tickets, call 330-729-4106.
Proceeds are placed in the student activity account and used to promote education in culinary arts.
