City police have busy day

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown police were busy Wednesday afternoon with a shooting on the East Side and a sleeping dad in a car on the South Side.

A Struthers man was sent to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after he was shot just after 1 p.m. on Albert Street. The man told police he was walking toward Hubbard Road when a white car approached him at a high speed.

The victim began running when the driver of the car rolled down the passenger window and pointed a gun at him, he said.

He ran southeast, heard five or six gunshots, and was struck in the arm but kept running until he reached a friend’s house, a police report says.

Police searched the area but found no suspects.

A few hours later, about 4 p.m., Cory Campana, 29, of Youngstown was issued a citation after police found him slumped over the wheel of his car on Colfax Street with his 5-year-old daughter in the back seat.

An officer removed the keys from the ignition while a firefighter woke him up.

Campana told police he hadn’t been sleeping enough because he’s a full-time student and works. Not sleeping combined with being on an increased dose of suboxone, a drug used to treat addiction, made him fall asleep, he told police.

The girl was placed in a relative’s custody.
