Valley golfers advance to next rounds

Poland senior Alex Rapp and the Cardinal Mooney High School girls golf team qualified for state during Tuesday’s Division II district tournament action at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna.

MOONEY

Cardinal Mooney’s girls team shot 370, one stroke better than Laurel, to win the Div. II district tournament at Tam O’Shanter Hills in Canton.

The top two teams and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team earned a trip to next week’s state tournament at Ohio State University.

Hadley Spielvogel led the Cardinals with an 82. She finished fourth overall. Laurel’s Jami Morris shot a 74 to win the event.

Also for the Cardinals, Jayne Bernard shot a 91, Alexandria Patrone 98 and Grace Ogden 99.

Springfield’s Madison Horvath shot a 90 to tie for ninth.

Champion finished eighth with 412. Lakeview was next with 420.

BOYS DISTRICT

NDCL won the Division II district tournament with a 311. Hawken and CVCA were next with 314 and 332 to earn a trip to the state tournament next week at Ohio State University.

With 333, Poland finished fourth. The top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams go to state.

Rapp shot a 74 and was named medalist after a three-way playoff. Also shooting 74s were Edgewood’s Dylan Fitchet and Hawken’s Jack Grole.

Also for Poland, Luke Nord shot an 84, Jake Snyder an 86 and Kyle Koziel an 89.

South Range was sixth with 339. Kaiden Sykes and Gavin Batdorff both shot 84s for the Raiders while Nick Fromel had an 85 and Pat Kennedy an 86.

With 350, Ursuline was eighth.

DIVISION I

In the Division I boys sectional tournament, Boardman’s Cole Christman shot a 72 at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance to finish second behind only Green’s Maxwell Moldovan who shot a 68. The Boardman senior was the only Mahoning Valley golfer in the Div. I event to advance to district play.

Canfield finished seventh and Boardman 10th in team competition. The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced.
