Saints top Phantoms in Fall Classic finale

CRANBERRY, PA.

The Youngstown Phantoms fell to the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-2 Sunday in their Fall Classic finale.

The Phantoms took an early lead when Jack Malone passed to Liam Robertson, who kicked the puck to his skate and went low-block on Dubuque goalie Matthew Thiessen. The Phantoms rode that momentum following the Robertson goal controlling play until James Sanchez blasted a one-timer over the shoulder of Evenson on the power play to even the game at one.

The game remained tied through the second period.

The Saints took their first lead at the 3:21 mark of the third as Derek Contessa scored off a designed face-off play. Riese Gaber added another goal just over five minutes later. The Phantoms got one back as Brett Murray broke loose and scored on a breakaway going backhand just around the outstretched pad of Thiessen at 11:34 of the third.

Contessa scored an empty-net goal, his second of the game, to give the Fighting Saints a 4-2 lead with 2:08 to play.

The Phantoms’ home opener is at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Covelli Centre against Muskegon.

Hamilton wins Russian GP with a little help

SOCHI, Russia

Lewis Hamilton closed in on his fifth Formula One title with victory in Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix after his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, pulled over to let him through as the pair approached halfway.

Hamilton leads Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by 50 points in the standings with five races remaining.

Hamilton held off Vettel at the start and briefly dropped behind him during pit stops before retaking the lead. As Vettel again put Hamilton under pressure on lap 25, a call came over team radio for Bottas to let his teammate through, and the Finn complied.
