Author to give lecture on Idora Park

Rick Shale will give a presentation on “The History of Idora Park” at 10 a.m. Dec. 8 at the Boardman Library, 7680 Glenwood Ave.
His lecture is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society. Admission is free but reservations are suggested; call Dona Hammond at 330-726-0651.
Shale is a graduate of Boardman High School.
He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and earned masters and doctoral degrees in American culture from the University of Michigan.
Before retiring, he taught for 35 years at Youngstown State University.
As a professor of English, Shale taught courses in film study and screenwriting and was a three-time recipient of the Distinguished Professor Award.
He currently serves on the board of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, and is co-president of the Boardman Historical Society.
He is also a past president of the Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society.
Shale previously served on the Mill Creek MetroParks Board of Park Commissioners, the national board of directors of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and as a trustee of the national Phi Kappa Phi Foundation.
He is the author of “Idora Park: The Last Ride of Summer” (co-authored with Charles J. Jacques Jr.) and “Historic Mill Creek Park” (co-authored with Carol Potter).
He has also written “Donald Duck Joins Up: The Walt Disney Studio During World War II,” and three books on the Academy Awards.
The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman Library for a lecture on some aspect of local history.
