EGCC in search of softball coach

YOUNGSTOWN

Eastern Gateway Community College is conducting a search for a head softball coach. The position would begin in the fall semester of 2019.

The inaugural EGCC softball program will begin play in the 2019-20 academic year.

EGCC is an NJCAA, Division III program and will compete in the Ohio Community College Conference.

A bachelor’s degree and playing and/or experience at the college level is required.

YSU linebacker, center make academic team

Youngstown State linebacker Armand Dellovade and center Vitas Hrynkiewicz were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s All-Academic Team on Wednesday.

Dellovade was a second-team selection while Hrynkiewicz was an honorable mention. On the field, both were second-team all MVFC selections this year.

Walker leads KSU past Detroit Mercy

DETROIT

Jaylin Walker scored a career-best 36 points on seven 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds, leading Kent State to its fourth-straight victory, a 76-72 win over Detroit Mercy on Wednesday night.

Walker was 10 of 24 from the field and sank all nine of his free throws for the Golden Flashes (6-1). Antonio Williams added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists, three steals.

Phantoms to raise funds for GM families

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Phantoms are donating a portion of the ticket proceeds from their games on Dec. 14-Dec. 16 to families that work at the General Motors factory in Lordstown, which is set to cease production in March. Any current GM employee can also attend the game for free.

“GM has been a vital employer in the Mahoning Valley since 1966 and today we stand with the families whose lives will be turned upside down,” Phantoms team president Andrew Goldman said.

OSU’s Haskins earns Big Ten’s top awards

COLUMBUS

Ohio State sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins, in the midst of one of the great statistical seasons in school and Big Ten Conference history, was today named the the Big Ten’s Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year and the league’s Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year.

Haskins was also named first-team all-Big Ten on both coach and media ballots and headlines a list of 11 Buckeyes on offense who were honored today by the conference.

Haskins leads the nation in touchdown passes with 42 and he ranks second with 4,081 passing yards. He has set nearly two dozen school and Big Ten records already this season including Big Ten marks for passing yards and touchdowns.

Hiram women’s hoops team defeats Thiel

GREENVILLE, PA.

The Thiel College women’s basketball team lost a non-conference game Wednesday night to the Hiram Terriers at Beeghly Gymnasium, 95-65.

Jess Vormelker (Grand Valley) led the Tomcats with 17 points while also securing nine rebounds. Vormelker moved into fifth place on Thiel’s career points list (1,243) with her 17 points Wednesday, surpassing Kelly Muffley (2009-13), who amassed 1,238 points in her career.

Thiel rally short vs. Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND

The Thiel College men’s basketball team were unable to finish a fourth quarter comeback against Case Western Reserve University as the Tomcats fell 83-79 on Wednesday night.

The Tomcats roared back from being down eight with 3:03 left in regulation to narrow the gap to 81-79 on a Nyric Gosley three-point jumper with 45 seconds remaining.
