1942: Fire engulfs the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston, killing 492 people in the deadliest nightclub blaze in history.

1961: Ernie Davis of Syracuse University becomes the first African-American to be named winner of the Heisman Trophy.

1990: Margaret Thatcher resigns as British prime minister during an audience with Queen Elizabeth II, who then conferred the premiership on John Major.

Youngstown Atty. Stuart Banks seeks to have the city’s boom-box ordinance overturned as unconstitutional because its criteria is subjective, and it encourages possible abuse by police.

Agricultural-dependent businesses in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties hurt by drought conditions between May 1 and Sept. 24, can apply for federal disaster loans through the Small Business Administration.

1978: William J. DeLancey, CEO of Republic Steel Corp., speaking at a dinner introducing Lawrence Weeks as manager of Republic’s Mahoning Valley District, says President Carter will not be successful in combatting inflation unless he cuts federal spending, borrowing and regulation.

Dr. Mary J. Beaubein, chairwoman of home economics at Youngstown State University, says a letter to the editor was incorrect when it alleged that “erythorbate” found among the ingredients on a package of bacon is earthworms. Sodium erytorbate is a preservative that helps keep the fat in bacon from becoming rancid.

Hubbard Board of Education veteran member Thomas Popa says the newest board member, William Kinnick, should resign after removing the board’s loose-leaf policy book from the superintendent’s office so that he could read it at home “without the superintendent looking over my shoulder.”

1968: An agreement is reached providing 55-cent-an hour pay raises over four years, ending a two-month-old General Fireproofing Co. strike.
