CRAFT SHOWS
Austintown Fitch Choir Boosters will host a Santa’s Workshop Craft Show in the Fitch High School cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 16. The show will offer crafts, consultants, a 50-50 raffle and a basket auction. The fundraiser will benefit the choir boosters, who are raising money for a trip to the Navy Base in Norfolk, Va.

Big Brothers Big Sisters will host a “Jingle Bell Calendar Raffle” fundraiser during December. All participants who donate $10 will be eligible to win $50 per day in December based on the 3-digit Pennsylvania evening drawing. The prize is $500 on Dec. 31. Ceramics Program of Youngstown State University’s art department will present “Empty Bowls: YSU Charity Event” at John J. McDonough Museum of Art, 525 Wick Ave., Youngstown, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds benefit the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations on a community level. The project is an opportunity to help feed the hungry in the community. Local artists have donated their time and talent to create handmade bowls for the event. Attendees choose an empty bowl in exchange for their donation and receive a simple meal to enjoy. The bowl is meant to be taken home as a symbol of their participation in helping feed those in need in Youngstown. Tickets are $15 if purchased online at www.eventbrite.com/e/empty-bowls-ysu-2018-tickets-48332955170 or $20 at the door. Seating is limited. Food tickets for children are $5 for those 10 and under.
Winona Area Historical Society will host its seventh annual Christmas in the Country fundraiser Saturday in the restored 1938 Meeting House. The facility is accessible. Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds from the event will be used for archival storage and display materials and for general operating expenses. The fundraiser will include functional and decorative items that were handcrafted and donated by local artisans. Featured items will be rustic game boards crafted from original meeting house ceiling boards, bird houses, rustic Santas, wooden children’s toys and puzzles, keepsake boxes, garden totes and earth staples, the fourth annual WAHS Christmas ornament depicting the Winona United Methodist Church, knitted tea cozies, Christmas silk and grapevine wreaths, horseshoe decor, homemade pies, artisanal jams and jellies, specialty breads, and more. The Trash and Treasures table will offer gently-used Christmas decor.

Salem Historical Society is using the theme “Made in Salem” for the annual Salem community calendar. This edition of the calendar features all photographs in full color. Austintown Farmers Market will host a Winter Market and community event at 5 p.m. Dec. 14. The market will offer a shopping experience for those seeking Christmas gifts as well as activities for all. Horse-drawn wagon rides will begin at 6 p.m. as Santa arrives. Free photos with Santa will be offered starting shortly after his arrival, and his workshop will be available for free kids’ crafts as well as a gift wrapping station. There will be a s’mores station, hot-chocolate bar, 50-50 and basket raffle and door prizes. The sponsor for this event is Greenwood Chevrolet, providing the free wagon rides and gift wrapping station. The Associated School Employees Credit Union is providing the free photos with Santa. Breakfast with Santa event to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at The Georgetown in Boardman. Breakfast with Santa is a community event that will feature a breakfast buffet, holiday music and dancing, visits with Santa, a mascot parade, crafts, face painting, entertainment and a chance auction. All children will receive a special gift. Mascots expected to attend include Coop from Quaker Steak and Lube, Aut Mori Grotto Clowns, Scrappy from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Boomer from the Youngstown Phantoms, Chuck E. Cheese and Helen, Slice from Pizza Hut, Blazin’ Bill Buffalo from BW3, Snow White and the Little Mermaid from Castle Entertainment, the eagle from Hubbard High School, the cow from Chick-Fil-A and Boardman Junior Middle School cheerleaders. Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, will host a Christmas Party from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 14. Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice Senior Center is sponsoring a bus trip to The Wheeling Island Casino and Oglebay Festival of Lights. The bus will leave the center at 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 12 for Youngstown Skate to meet the rest of the group. Participants are asked to use the side parking lot only. While en route, participants will play bingo and have raffle drawings. Upon arrival at Wheeling Downs, each person will receive $25 in free slot play. The bus will leave the casino at 4 p.m. for the Oglebay Festival of Lights. Snack bags provided courtesy of First Light Home Care. Cost is $30 for senior center members and $35 for guests. Howland UMC and The First Congregational Church of Wayne will sponsor a one-day bus trip to Oglebay Festival of Lights with Cabelas on Dec. 11. Cost is $39 per person. The trip includes a laser show and stop and shop at Cabelas along with a dinner stop on your own. Quakertown Trolley’s “Light Tour” of Salem, which will follow the Christmas Parade on Thursday, has seats available. The tour will load at the Salem Chamber lot on East State Street at 8 p.m. for the first tour, which will take approximately 35 minutes. Other tours are planned for 8:45 and 9:30.
