1859: British naturalist Charles Darwin publishes “On the Origin of Species,” which explains his theory of evolution by means of natural selection.
1917: Nine members of the Milwaukee police department and two civilians are killed when a bomb explodes inside a police station. 1944: During World War II, U.S. bombers based on Saipan attack Tokyo in the first raid against the Japanese capital by land-based planes.
2000: The U-S Supreme Court steps into the bitter, overtime struggle for the White House, agreeing to consider George W. Bush’s appeal against the hand recounting of ballots in Florida.
2008: A Muslim charity, the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, and five of its former leaders are convicted by a federal jury in Dallas of funneling millions of dollars to the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
2013: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu harshly condemns the international community’s nuclear deal with Iran, calling it a “historic mistake” and saying he is not bound by the agreement.
2017: Militants attack a crowded mosque in Egypt with gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades, killing more than 300 people in the deadliest-ever attack by Islamic extremists in the country.

State Sen Robert Hagan says during a legislative update at the Jewish Community Center that he has a health reform package that would provide benefits for everyone, financed by taxes on alcohol, tobacco, employers and workers. Insurance agent George Morris of Salem counters that that the insurance industry is already addressing the problem by creating health care coalitions in Ohio.
1978: A Newton Falls teenager who police say was refused permission to use the lift at a Milton Township service station is being sought for questioning in the murder of the station’s manager, Thomas Henderson, and his wife, Donna, both 42 and parents of four children.
A natural gas explosion levels the home of Paul Hauck on Newton Falls Road in Lake Milton. Hauck, who was in a workshop apart from the house, was treated for minor injuries by an ambulance crew.

1968: Broke, without credit and almost without hope, Youngstown city schools will close for the year the day before Thanksgiving. More than 27,000 students will be out of class for five weeks.
Faced with having to provide bus service for some 2,500 parochial school students while Youngstown public schools are shut down in December, school officials will meet to discuss where they might find the funds.
