Canfield High School senior wrestler Tyler Stein formally announced his intention to continue his academic and wrestling career at The Ohio State University at a National Letter of Intent signing ceremony at the high school on Nov. 14.
He is the son of Doug and Tracey Stein.
Stein will enter his senior campaign as a returning OHSAA Division II state champion, and is currently ranked at the top of his weight class in Ohio for the upcoming season. Stein is also ranked as the number 11 wrestler in the country at the 200-pound weight class by the wrestling publication Flowrestling.
Stein has competed on the national stage earning multiple All-American honors including placement at the USA Wrestling Cadet World Team Trials, National High School Coaches Association tournament and Flonationals.
As team captain, Stein has helped lead the Canfield wrestling team to three consecutive OHSAA Division II state runner-up finishes, back to back district team championships, as well as two consecutive Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament championships.
In addition to his accolades on the mat, Stein is a multi-year starter and team captain for the football team which has gone 19-1 over the past two regular seasons.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are a NCAA Division I program and are a member of the Big Ten Conference. The team is led by head coach Tom Ryan and are returning NCAA team runners-up. The team has consistently produced NCAA individual champions and All-Americans under Ryan and bring in one of the most highly touted recruiting classes for next season.
Head wrestling coach Steve Pitts welcomed the large crowd of students, faculty, staff and community members to the signing.
“This is a tremendous occasion as we watch Tyler sign his National Letter of Intent to wrestle at The Ohio State University. As coach of the wrestling team, this is a tremendous honor. To watch all the hard work Tyler has put in over the years and to watch him grow has been amazing. I have seen his dedication to wrestling and football. As team captain, he is a person of high caliber, which is one of the most important things. This is also a credit to his family. He didn’t do this alone. He said it was his dream to go to OSU, and I am so glad his dream is coming true,” Pitts said.
Stein then addressed the crowd.
“First, I’d like to thank God and my mom and dad. They always pushed me to do my best. I’d also like to thank my sisters and coaches for always pushing me. Everyone had my best interests in mind. Thank you,” Stein said.
To end the event, Stein greeted and received congratulations from teammates, classmates, coaches, faculty, staff and family.
