To celebrate voting week, starting Nov. 5 students at Poland Union exercised their civic duty voting for a new fish for the school’s aquarium.
Each student at the school, including preschool students, voted from the four options.
Students in preschool and kindergarten voted from paper, while all other students voted through their Google accounts.
“The legal voting age at Poland is 3-years-old,” said Poland teacher Nick Blanch who coordinated a majority of the voting.
Blanch gave a presentation to students during computer class to help them get to know the candidates.
“Just like when you are voting you want to know what you’re voting for,” Blanch said.
The options included a watchman goby, which was described as peaceful and helps clean the sand, a file fish, described as friendly and helps to clean rocks, the fire fish, described as colorful and a fast swimmer, and finally a mystery option who “likes to clown around.”
Students voted for the fire fish, which will be added to the tank.
“Its a great way to teach students about voting and let them know their vote has a say, even in the school,” said school principal Mike Masucci.
Masucci said that the ballot was rigged in a way that all of the fish options were able to be placed in the tank without issues with current species.
“Voting is important and we want students to understand that even at a young age,” Masucci said.
