Brownlee Woods Neighborhood Association will host its monthly meeting Thursday at Faith Community Church, 1919 E. Midlothian Blvd. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with social and refreshment time, and the business meeting will start at 6:30. The featured speaker will be Youngstown Police Chief Robin Lees. He will address residents’ issues and concerns. Councilwoman Basia Adamczak and police officer Phil Skowron also have been invited to attend.

First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown will introduce its first Dinner Speaker Series with John Allen at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. John Allen, editor of Crux and senior Vatican analyst for CNN, will speak on “Francis After 5” with an opportunity for questions regarding Pope Francis. Friends of the Austintown Library will meet at 10 a.m. Monday in the library’s meeting room, 600 S. Raccoon Road. The speaker for November will be Dr. Robert Marcus, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. He has developed a community resource and referral center for the purpose of accessing services that provide optimal care for homeless veterans. The program is open to the public.

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host its next luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at A La Cart in Canfield. Lori Factor will speak about special events coming up at YSU and Stambaugh Auditorium. Newcomers welcomes anyone who is looking to learn more about the community and is interested in forming new friendships, especially anyone who has had a change in their life and would like to try something new. Steel Valley Ukers will meet Thursday at Michael Kusalaba Library. Those who are interested in learning ukulele are encouraged to attend. The group meets once a month at the Austintown Library, usually on a Saturday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. and also at Michael Kusalaba library once a month on a Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The focus is for beginners during the first half of each session, followed by more complex group tunes and solos the last half. Poland Historical Society members and their guests will celebrate the Christmas season at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 with dinner at the Poland Library, 311 S. Main St., Poland. The society will provide the main meat for the dinner, and members are asked to take either a side dish, casserole, salad or dessert to be shared with the group. NAMI Mahoning Valley also offers Family Support Groups that provide information and support for family members and friends of individuals with mental illness.
