International Peace Light comes to Mahoning Valley
The International Peace Light will arrive in Youngstown on the evening of Dec. 3 and within the following week it will be distributed. In Mahoning County, it will be available at JMJ Spiritual Connection store, located at 3408 Canfield Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg), beginning on Dec. 4 until Christmas Eve during normal business hours and Camp Stambaugh Scout Shop, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield, beginning on Dec. 8 until Dec. 22 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12–7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley to have luncheon
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley is having its November luncheon on Nov. 28 at 11:30 a.m. at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. Lori Factor will be talking about special events coming up at Youngstown State University and Stambaugh Auditorium. They are also having a holiday gathering on Dec. 11 at Johnny’s Restaurant, located at 7807 Market St. in Boardman, at 11:30 a.m. Members and guests will be playing a game to win prizes of goodies. To participate in the game, you need to bring something to eat or drink that would be enjoyed in the coming season. Grinch party
Holiday fun will be a cinch at the Canfield library on Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. at the WHO-LIDAY party starring “The Grinch.” They will view the movie and more. This event is for children of all ages and is a holiday program.
Remembering the 1950s
Christmas department store windows, aluminum trees, bubble lights and Mr. Jingeling. Relive the excitement and nostalgia of a 50s Christmas in Northeast Ohio with Laura Loew from Lost in the Past at this event at the Canfield library on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. After the presentation, stay for some live holiday music by Stellare Strings, string quartet. Ugly sweater contest at the library
Join in the fun to vote for the library staff member wearing the ugliest holiday sweater from Dec. 10-15 at the Canfield library during regular hours. One vote per person per day, and your vote enters you into a drawing for a gift certificate prize.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at 10 a.m. every Thursday in December at the Canfield library.

Bookstores and libraries invited to join in celebration of Short Fiction Day
The annual Celebrate Short Fiction Day takes place on Dec. 21, and founder Nancy Christie is inviting bookstores and libraries to create their own event. Christie explained that she created “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day to honor the short story in all its forms and lengths. She encourages libraries and bookstores to host their own “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day events and has provided tip sheets on her web page (http://tinyurl.com/CelebrateShortFictionDay) for those looking for ideas.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Lego my library
Meet at the Canfield library on Dec. 1 at 2:30 p.m. and Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Tales to tails
Read to your favorite therapy dogs on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children in grades K and up. Therapy dogs are provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local pet therapy group.
Learn how to write a personal letter
The class, which will take place on Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, will go over formatting for personal letters, including condolence/sympathy, thank you, character reference, and commendation. Tips to help with your letter will also be discussed, including addressing correspondence and components. Stationary paper, pens and envelopes will be available. This event is for adults and teens.
Create a cat castles
Spoil your cat rotten for the holidays by making them a cat castle at the Canfield library on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. The library will supply cardboard, paper, crayons and a few other items. Bring your own scissors, cat toys and other supplies to attach if you would like. This event is for adults and teens.
Coloring for grown-ups
Join the Canfield library on Dec. 10 at 10 a.m and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This event is for adults and teens.
Holiday bead work
Make a holiday bracelet during this event at the Canfield library on Dec. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and have something to wear for this festive season. This event is for ages 9-12.
Sit and stitch
Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on Dec. 5 and 20. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (Unfinished Objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.
Family movie
Join the Canfield library on Dec. 8 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday movie matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children ages 7-years and younger must be with an adult. This event is for the entire family.
Movie night
Join the Canfield library on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. for a movie night where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG 13.

In the final genealogy program of 2018, which will take place on Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m., they will explore Yuletide celebrations as enjoyed in selected countries. This event is for adults and teens. Kennsington Golf Club and CTW Development Corp. collect toys
Kennsington Golf Club and Grille and CTW Development Corp. have teamed up with the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program for its annual toy drive, which is going on now through Dec. 14. Kennsington, located in Canfield’s Westford Lifestyle Community, will collect new, unwrapped toys that will go to less fortunate children in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season. During the drive, anyone who donates a toy will receive a coupon for nine holes of golf at the course. This has been a standing tradition since the organizations first partnered on the toy drive nearly a decade ago. The local Toys for Tots, located in Vienna, serves both Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Toys can be brought to Kennsington Golf Club’s ProShop, located at 4171 Westford Place in Canfield, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily.
Audubon Society presents “The Birds of Lake Milton”
The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “The Birds of Lake Milton” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 26 at the Canfield library. Join fellow Mahoning Valley Audubon member Trish Gunther on a journey of birding through the seasons at Lake Milton. Learn what types of birds travel through the area during migration and some tips to identifying various species. They will also discuss what birds migrate and which ones stay all year.
Annual sale to benefit Angels for Animals
Angels for Animals is hosting its annual Antiques, Jewelry and Holiday D cor Sale. Raising funds for general operations, the sale is managed by a crew of volunteers who embrace the mission of saving and improving the lives of companion animals in a vast area. Early bird admission will be offered on Dec. 7 from 6-8 p.m. at a cost of $5. Free admission will be offered on Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event will take place in the Andrews Hall at Angels for Animals, located at 4750 West South Range Road in Canfield. Canfield Village Middle School hosts food drive
Students at Canfield Village Middle School are having a canned food drive from Nov. 12-30. Canned food can be dropped off at the middle school. The donation will be given to Second Harvest Food Bank to help with the holidays.
The GREAT Library READ contest
Now that the GREAT American READ contest has ended, the Canfield library wants to find out what some of the favorites are locally. Simply vote for your favorite title from the list and they will see what you like best. One vote per person per day. One entry will be randomly selected to win a gift certificate prize. Retired educators to meet in December
The Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Dec. 12 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The Boardman High School jazz band will provide the entertainment. Carol Kinsey, regional liaison from ORTA, will present updates from STRS. The community service project is monetary donations and toys for the Salvation Army. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet lunch, which will feature baked ham, will be served. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days.
