Sheriff: Former Ohio corrections officer charged with bribery

HAMILTON (AP)

A sheriff says a former corrections officer accused of bringing illegal items including cellphones into a jail in Ohio has been charged with bribery.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said in a release Tuesday that former Corrections Officer Brandon Moore was arrested on the felony charge. The statement says a routine search conducted recently at the Butler County Correctional Facility in Hamilton where Moore was assigned turned up a cellphone and led to further investigation.

The sheriff says detectives determined Moore also brought in illegal items including miscellaneous tools and protein powder. Investigators say Moore was responsible for bringing items to inmates in exchange for money.

It couldn’t immediately be determined whether the 34-year-old Hamilton man has an attorney yet.

Hamilton is roughly 35 miles northwest of Cincinnati.

Police: 2 sisters are found dead in overheated apartment

FOREST PARK (AP)

Police say two sisters have been found dead in their suburban Cincinnati apartment where the heat had reached over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Forest Park police say of 41-year-old Theresa Johnson and 44-year-old Mary Johnson both had developmental disabilities and their professional caregiver called 911 after discovering their bodies. Police said the caregiver had dropped them off at their apartment Sunday afternoon and returned Monday to take them to work.

Police Lt. Adam Pape said it appeared the furnace malfunctioned.

Firefighters estimated the temperature inside the apartment when they arrived about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Both women were in bed.

The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office hasn’t released the official cause of death. Police don’t suspect foul play.

Police union leader calls for an end to student’s death probes

CINCINNATI (AP)

A police union leader says it’s time to end the investigations into the failed response to a 16-year-old Ohio student who died trapped in a minivan parked near his school.

Fraternal Order of Police local president Sgt. Dan Hils says there have been multiple investigations that cleared police officers of any “willful negligence.” He says officers “also have been traumatized” by the death and deserve closure.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said last week his office thoroughly reviewed the Cincinnati police and Hamilton County sheriff’s investigations and two independent reviews. Deters expressed sympathy last Thursday to Kyle Plush’s family while concluding that no charges were appropriate in the case.

Plush’s family says more investigation is needed. They’re frustrated with incomplete explanations of what happened and the slow pace of reform.
