Late goal lifts Phantoms over Flying Aces
BLOOMINGTON, Ill.
Liam Robertson’s back-handed goal with 3:04 to play gave the Youngstown Phantoms a 4-3 victory over the Central Illinois Flying Aces on Friday night at Grossinger Motors Arena.
The Phantoms (6-7-0-2) spotted the Flying Aces an early 2-0 lead, but Trevor Kuntar broke through for Youngstown at the 14:27 mark of the first period and Jack Malone tied the game just over a minute later.
Central Illinois regained the lead on Jeremy Davidson’s goal in the second period.
The Phantoms tied the game at 3 when Malone sent a pass through the slot and Brett Murray redirected the puck into the net. It stayed that way until Robertson broke the tie.
Bradley Marek and Cal Kiefiuk scored early for the Flying Aces against Phantoms goalie Jon Mor (24 saves).
The teams meet again tonight at 8:07.
YSU bowling team drops five matches
MILLSBORO, DEL.
The Youngstown State bowling team had a rough day on the lanes Friday in the Hawk Classic Invitational at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.
The Penguins went 0-5 in their five head-to-head matches and finished at the bottom of the tournament standings in total pinfall as they struggled to master the pattern. YSU posted 4,235 pins over their five Baker matches for an average game of 169.4.
YSU lost its opening match 961-860 to No. 11 North Carolina A&T, and a 958-798 loss to No. 23 Monmouth followed. The Penguins’ closest match of the day then came in an 818-795 setback to Coppin State. YSU had its highest total of the afternoon with a 945, but it unfortunately came when No. 12 Sacred Heart posted a 1,078. No. 14 Lincoln Memorial won the final match 970-837.
YSU will compete in five traditional matches today at the Hawk Classic Invitational.
Rockets ‘parting ways’ with Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony is done in Houston.
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey released a statement Thursday saying the team is “parting ways” with Anthony and “working toward a resolution.”
Anthony played just 10 games for the Rockets after signing a one-year, $2.4 million deal during the offseason.
Pens’ Cullen fined $1,000 for Miller trip

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cullen has been fined $1,000 by the NHL for a dangerous trip of Tampa Bay Lightning forward and East Palestine native J.T. Miller.
The infraction came during the first period of Thursday night’s game, a 4-3 victory by Tampa Bay. Cullen was assessed a minor penalty for tripping.
Wijnaldum, Depay strike for Netherlands

Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum scored just before halftime and Memphis Depay converted an audacious extra-time penalty as the Netherlands team that did not qualify for the World Cup beat world champion France 2-0 on Friday in the UEFA Nations League.
The margin of victory flattered Didier Deschamps’ injury-hit team, with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris making a string of good saves in the second half to deny Denzel Dumfries, Depay, and Frenkie de Jong.
Orioles hire Elias as executive VP, GM
BALTIMORE
Astros assistant general manager Mike Elias was hired Friday to rebuild the Baltimore Orioles, who traded many of their star players last season before finishing with the worst record in the majors.
Elias will carry the title of executive vice president and general manager. The 35-year-old Elias comes to the Orioles after working as scouting director and assistant GM in Houston, where he helped transform a last-place team into 2017 World Series champions.
