Junior Mitchel Dunham ran a time of 16:50 placing 42nd overall at the 2018 OHSAA State CC Championship on Nov. 10.

Dunham finished his junior campaign as the 11th All-Time Best Runner in Boardman Cross Country history from a time posted earlier in the 2018 season.

“The weather and the course conditions really hampered the entire field,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “Every runner probably would have had a drop of 45-75 seconds if the weather and course were under more normal conditions. I am very proud of the perseverance that Mitchel showed during this race, he battled a very talented field, despite the extremely poor course conditions, and finished in the top 25 percent of all Division I athletes.”

The meet was delayed one week due to heavy rain in the Columbus area. Added to the standing water and mud on the course was a race time temperature of 33 degrees with a wind chill that had the feel of the upper teens during much of the meet.

“This has been the craziest weather I have ever seen for a cross country season,” said Phillips. “We had races with heat indexes over 100, meets cancelled due to tornado warnings, state postponed due to rain and then we complete the season with temps in the low 30’s.”
