Brownlee Woods Neighborhood Association will host its monthly meeting Nov. 29 at Faith Community Church, 1919 E. Midlothian Blvd. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with social and refreshment time and the business meeting will start at 6:30. The featured speaker will be Youngstown Police Chief Robin Lees. He will address residents’ issues and concerns. Councilwoman Basia Adamczak and police officer Phil Skowron also have been invited to attend.

First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown will introduce its first Dinner Speaker Series with John Allen at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. Friends of the Austintown Library will meet at 10 a.m. Nov. 26 in the library’s meeting room, 600 S. Raccoon Road. The speaker will be Dr. Robert Marcus, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. He has developed a community resource and referral center for accessing services that provide optimal care for homeless veterans. The program is open to the public.

Friends of the Mahoning River, a nonprofit environmental group, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Oak Hill Collaborative, 507 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown. Parking is in the rear of the building. The group will discuss its meetings with Akron’s Watershed Management Team as well as the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments’ Citizen’s Advisory Board. SOCIETIES

Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will host its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the St. Charles Church ministry building, 7325 Westview Drive, Boardman. It is accessible. The program will be “Haunted Ohio: Witches, Warlocks and Ghosts.” Genealogical research will be used to illuminate the true story behind urban legends in Ohio. The speaker will be Mary Jama. There will be no meeting in December. The computer interest group will not meet before the meeting. Mercer County Historical Society, 119 South Pitt St., Mercer, Pa., will offer an overview of the Korean War during its Modern History/History in the Making discussion group Tuesday. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be presented by David James. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the program starts at 7. The discussion group is part of the society’s ongoing efforts to provide programming related to local history. The roundtable meets the third Tuesday of each month from September through May. Poland Historical Society will meet at the Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center Road, Poland, on Tuesday. The business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. The society will elect officers at this meeting. All positions are open for election. President Larry Baughman has indicated he is not seeking re-election, but will be available to help a new president settle into the position. Vice president (Laurie Fox), secretary (Dave Smith), and treasurer (Joanne Eiselstein) are accepting nominations for each officer position to be voted on at the meeting. Nominations from the floor also will be accepted. November’s program “American Outhouses” will be presented by Ted Heineman at 7:30 p.m.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Gamblers Anonymous will meet at 7:30 p.m. today at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman. Another meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Christ Presbyterian Church, 3425 Hopkins Road, Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about an hour and a half and are closed unless participants have suffered from a gambling addiction.

Grief Share Support Group, hosted by Church Hill United Methodist Church, 189 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty, meets at 6 p.m. each Thursday through Dec. 13. The program is for all who have suffered a loss. The meetings take place on the second floor of the church’s educational building. For information, call Janice Ferry at 330-759-1924.

Grief Recovery Instructional Support Groups will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home Care Center, adjacent to the funeral home on Main Street in Hubbard. The groups are led by Phillip Roland, grief counselor for the funeral home, and are open to anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one. NAMI Mahoning Valley offers Connections support groups for adults living with mental illness, in a discussion format, to promote self-disclosure in a safe, relaxed, supportive and confidential environment. Connections meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at Alta Care, 142 Javit Court, Austintown. NAMI Mahoning Valley also offers Family Support Groups that provide information and support for family members and friends of individuals with mental illness. Family groups meet the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Girard Library, 105 E. Prospect St.; and the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Alta Care, 142 Javit Court. Dual Diagnosis Group meets the first and third Monday of each month at the Homes for Kids office, 165 E. Park Ave., Niles.
