To kick off the boys and girls Canfield basketball seasons, a Meet the Team Rally was offered in the Canfield High School gymnasium on Nov. 8.
Family, friends, fans and community members packed the ‘Cardinal’s Nest’ as players on the boys and girls seventh-grade, eighth-grade, ninth-grade, junior varsity and varsity squads were introduced, along with their coaches.
Boys varsity Head Coach Todd Muckleroy welcomed the large crowd.
“Welcome to the 2018-19 girls basketball, boys basketball and basketball cheerleaders Meet the Team Rally. Thank you for coming out tonight. All we ask is that you make a lot of noise tonight for our players and cheerleaders. They’re ready to go,” Muckleroy said.
To start the program, the seventh-grade boys basketball team was introduced by announcer Ken English. To show off their skills, the team then scrimmaged against each other for four minutes. Next, the seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleaders were introduced and performed a cheer. The seventh-grade and eighth-grade girls teams were then recognized and showed their talents with a shooting and dribbling drill.
Next, the eighth-grade boys were introduced and took to the floor to play a scrimmage.
“The eighth-grade boys are coached by Brady Clark, who was a player for us not long ago. We are very excited about this group,” Muckleroy said.
The CHS freshmen cheer squad then took the floor with the basketball cheerleaders being recognized. The squad then performed a cheer and a dance to pump up the crowd.
Taking a break from introducing players, Muckleroy asked for volunteers to attempt a half court shot.
The freshmen boys basketball team, under Coach Rob Donahue, was introduced and then took to the court to play a scrimmage.
“Coach Donahue is a 1991 graduate of Canfield. We are lucky to have him in our program again. He gets these boys ready to play,” Muckleroy said.
The freshmen and junior varsity girls teams were next to be introduced. The players showed the crowd their basketball skills while scrimmaging each other.
The CHS junior varsity basketball cheerleaders were introduced and then took to the center of the floor to perform a cheer and a dance for the crowd.
The boys junior varsity team was introduced and showed off their skills with several shooting and passing drills which focused on teamwork and communication.
“After 32 years, Coach Tinkey has stepped down. We are lucky enough to have Coach Cory Lanterman, Coach Anthony Camuso and Coach Joe Carbon in our program,” Muckelroy said.
The CHS basketball varsity cheerleaders were introduced and the squad performed a cheer and dance.
The boys and girls varsity teams were then introduced simultaneously to the cheering crowd. The girls played a scrimmage against each other and the boys performed a passing and shooting drill to showcase their basketball skills.
Muckleroy then announced a senior shot challenge, during which the senior boys and girls competed against each other. The senior girls came out on top and won the challenge.
To close the rally, the boys varsity team versed each other in a hotly contested scrimmage.
“Thank you again for coming out to the Cardinal’s Nest tonight, I’d like to thank both the boys and girls Basketball Boosters. They do an excellent job for our players,” Muckleroy said.
